In each catch, the fish are kept apart and are not released until the end of the last catch. This method leads to a depletion of the population number, which means that the number of fish caught in each catch will decrease. This makes it possible to make a linear regression between the number of fish caught in each catch(Y-axis) and accumulated number of fishes caught in the previous catches(X-axis). Like this, one can make a population estimate by calculating the intercept with the X-axis.

In the regression analysis, a coefficient of correlation r between random variables X and Y is a quantitative index of association between these two variables. In its squared form, as a coefficient of determination r 2, indicates the amount of variance in the criterion variable Y that is accounted for by the variation in the predictor variable X. In the multiple regression analysis, the set of predictor variables X1, X2,... is used to explain variability of the criterion variable Y. A multivariate counterpart of the coefficient of determination r 2 is the coefficient of multiple determination, R 2. The square root of the coefficient of multiple determination is the coefficient of multiple correlation, R.

This analysis identifies the factors and factor weights which best explain the relative market pay levels of benchmark jobs. The job component method is a statistically developed job evaluation method which relies on scored questionnaires, multiple regression analysis and factor analysis. Employees complete a standardized questionnaire which either identifies the behavioral components of the job or the task based components of the job. The incumbent indicates for each task or behavior, the importance of the category and the frequency of perfomance. The questionnaire is input into a computerized mathematical model and a job score is determined.

Model output statistics... have often taken the form of multilinear regression equations derived by screening potential model-forecast variables as predictors. The method produces forecasts of weather variables that to some extent account for the random and systematic errors in the numerical weather prediction model.

The difference between model output statistics (MOS) and perfect prognostic is that in MOS the predictand is related to the actual model output, while in perfect prog, the predictand is related to observations or representations of them at (nearly) concurrent times.
