OBS

The Aircraft to Satellite Data Relay(ASDAR) programme is sponsored by an International meteorological group in order to augment the collection of upper air meteorological data, and thereby improve the accuracy of global weather forescasting. It has been developed by Matra Marconi Space, UK in collaboration with the WMO to enable aircraft to generate and transmit real-time meteorological reports via geostationary meteorological satellites for global relay. It is an automated system offering significant advantages, including reduced crew responsibility delays and errors. ASDAR, operating in conjunction with meteorological satellites, has proved to be a versatile tool in obtaining meteorological data automatically from flights over both oceans and continents, especially over areas not serviced by meteorological stations. In addition, during the ascent and descent phases of the aircraft, observations at regular pressure intervals provide a detailed vertical atmospheric temperature profile near the airports. The meteorological data provided by this system has proved to be very useful for improving the weather forecasting service.

When informed that an emergency has been declared by a pilot, the airport ARFF unit will take up emergency positions adjacent to the landing runway and stand by to provide assistance. Once response to an emergency situation has been initiated, the ARFF unit will remain at the increased state of alert until informed that the pilot-in-command has terminated the emergency.

CONT

One of the services that few people think of when they think about the airport... is the aircraft rescue and fire fighting unit(ARFF). Comprising one chief, three captains, and 12 firefighters, the unit is divided into three crews – each working 24-hour shifts. The aircraft rescue and fire fighting unit does far more than respond to fire calls. In fact, fire calls make up a very small portion of their regular workload.

CONT

  • Wind Energy
DEF

A wind turbine, mostly experimental, which can be flown in high speed winds and altitudes to produce energy.

CONT

An airborne wind turbine is a design concept for a wind turbine that is supported in the air without a tower. A tether would be used to transmit energy to the ground. These systems would have the advantage of tapping an almost constant wind and doing so without a set of slip rings or yaw mechanism, without the expense of tower construction. The main disadvantage is that kites and "helicopters" come down when there is insufficient wind. These schemes require a very long power cable and an aircraft exclusion zone. As of 2006, no commercial airborne wind turbines are in regular operation.

  • Énergie éolienne
DEF

Something that would make ecologists happy is a clean airplane. And the Ipanema, Brazil' s first totally alcohol-powered aircraft, is almost off the ground. The project has been in development for two years, under the wing of Neiva, a division of the aircraft manufacturer Embraer and Brazil' s largest agricultural aircraft manufacturer. The Ipanema does not pollute because, unlike conventionally fuelled engines, its alcohol-fuelled engine releases no lead residues into the atmosphere. However, for farmers, the real advantage is low operating cost. "Alcohol is four times less expensive than regular aviation fuel. So, while the alcohol engine consumes a little more fuel, just like automobiles, the bottom line is a savings of about 60 percent"... The alcohol-fuelled engine also boasts five percent more power. This slight advantage will allow the plane to carry extra quantities of crop-dusting products. Another advantage is that this type of engine runs cooler, giving it a longer maintenance cycle and useful life... The aircraft is still in the approval process, so the first alcohol-powered Ipanema will not fly until March 2005, after it has been completely certified.

Notice that there is no knob to set the heading of the DG [directional gyro] to match that of the compass. Why? Because it is slaved. Slaved? Back in the tailcone of the aircraft, away from all ferrous metal, is a magnetic compass. The output of this compass is electrically "enhanced" and amplified through a "flux gate"... This signal is fed to the HSI to drive the DG portion of the unit. What this means is that the reading is very accurate, not subject to the vagrancies of the regular magnetic compass, and is constantly being corrected for drift. On some aircraft, this signal is also used to slave the ADF heading card.

CONT

The directional gyroscope is used in aircraft and is sometimes called a self-levelling free gyroscope corrected for drift.
