The founding partners view CSCs as a major vehicle to enhance the level and increase the efficiency of delivery of service to high-performance athletes and coaches. CSC activity is intended to complement the programming of NSOs in the pursuit of high-performance excellence with a focus on coordinating access and delivery of essential support services for athletes and coaches at their site of regular training in Canada.

Il existe six centres nationaux du sport (appelés désormais centres canadiens du sport) au Canada atlantique, à Montréal, à Toronto, à Winnipeg, Calgary et Vancouver.

Le titre «Centre canadien du sport» a été utilisé dans le «Rapport du groupe de travail du ministre d'État (sport) sur le sport pour les personnes handicapées» publié en 2004. La «Politique sur le sport pour les personnes ayant un handicap a été publié en 2006 et utilise le titre «Centre canadien multisport». C'est donc le titre à privilégier.
