Truck hunting is wheel set oscillation caused by the dynamic response of a railway car truck when operating above certain speeds. The truck oscillates between the rails with hard flange contact occurring at regular intervals of 30 to 50 feet. ASDAR, operating in conjunction with meteorological satellites, has proved to be a versatile tool in obtaining meteorological data automatically from flights over both oceans and continents, especially over areas not serviced by meteorological stations. In addition, during the ascent and descent phases of the aircraft, observations at regular pressure intervals provide a detailed vertical atmospheric temperature profile near the airports. The meteorological data provided by this system has proved to be very useful for improving the weather forecasting service.
