Immobilization of enzymes by crystallization and subsequent cross-linking provides structures which have a regular three-dimensional molecular arrangement, and a high packing density. Such structures are useful for both X-ray diffraction analysis, and also physico-chemical studies of enzymes in the solid state. An important feature of the enzyme crystals is that they have large liquid-filled channels surrounding the individual protein molecules, therefore, as in dilute solution, most of the surface of the enzyme is in contact with the surrounding solvent. Since the channels are permeable to low molecular weight solutes, it is possible to study the properties of enzymes in crystals in much the same way as when in solution. Lysosyme is an... enzyme whose catalytic mechanism is being studied. X-ray analysis of the crystalline enzyme shows that it contains a long cleft as its active site, which can accommodate its normal substrate, the long-chain peptidoglycan of bacterial cell walls. 3, record 7, English, - crystalline%20enzyme

3, record 7, French, - enzyme%20cristallis%C3%A9e

It usually proves easier to provide all units with an equal amount of sunshine with this type of layout... three main types of project layouts have been identified : the streetfront, the court, and the row layouts. The streetfront layout, where buildings follow the orientation of the streets or lanes, results in a random ratio of north-south to east-west oriented buildings... The court arrangement consists of clusters of buildings facing inward onto a common open space... Caldera formation. - A collapse is triggered by the emptying of the magma chamber beneath the volcano, usually as the result of a large volcanic eruption. If enough magma is erupted, the emptied chamber will not be able to support the weight of the volcanic edifice (the mountain) above. Fractures will form around the edge of the chamber, usually in a roughly circular shape. These ring fractures may in fact serve as volcanic vents. As the magma chamber empties, the center of the volcano within the ring fractures begins to collapse. The collapse may occur as the result of a single massive eruption, or it may occur in stages as the result of a series of eruptions. The total area that collapses may be hundreds or thousands of square kilometers. 2, record 10, English, - caldera%20formation

Calderas can become filled with pyroclastic material and even lava. In fact, it has been suggested that caldera formation is a regular process in the growth of basalt volcanoes, such as those in Hawaii. Thus, you would have a large eruption, followed by caldera formation; the caldera is then filled over hundreds or thousands of years, built up, and then a new one is formed at a later date. 3, record 10, English, - caldera%20formation

Alors que cela est presque impossible avec l'accès à Internet, au moyen de la ligne téléphonique commutée régulière, les services à large bande offrent le soutien nécessaire pour consulter ces possibilités ou y participer. 1, record 13, French, - Services%20%C3%A0%20large%20bande%20%3A%20Internet%20%C3%A0%20haute%20capacit%C3%A9%20pour%20toutes%20les%20collectivit%C3%A9s%20canadiennes

The BD BioCoat [trademark] Deep-Well Plate is a novel plate designed for use with 6-well size BD BioCoat or BD Falcon [trademark] Cell Culture Inserts. This plate accommodates the large media volumes needed when culturing cells on microporous membranes. The basolateral compartment of one well of the BD BioCoat Deep-Well Plate can hold up to seven times as much medium as the basolateral compartment of a regular 6-well plate(17 ml versus 2. 5 ml). This significantly larger media volume reduces the frequency of cell feeding during extended cell culture periods or when culturing cells at the air-liquid interface. Recommended applications include the culture of Caco-2 cells, airway epithelial cells, or keratinocytes on BD BioCoat and BD Falcon [trademark] Cell Culture Inserts. 2, record 14, English, - deep%20well%20plate

In Costa Rica, 95% of the farmers fence with living trees instead of dead posts... Farmers establish living fences by planting large cuttings about 2. 5 m long and 8-20 cm in diameter, attaching several strands of barbed wire to them... Living fences are usually pruned once a year to keep them in good shape and to avoid damage to the wire... Living fences are comparatively cost-effective, need careful establishment and regular maintenance, are long-lived, provide numerous products and benefits besides fencing, are difficult to remove, and are very popular among poor farmers. Dead fences, by contrast, are expensive, require much labor to establish, need some maintenance, are of limited durability, are easy to remove, provide no other products, but are more prestigious than living fences. 3, record 16, English, - live%20fence

Long-hole blasting. This method of blasting, employing diamond drills or extension steel drills with tungsten carbide bits, is being applied increasingly to ore winning operations where conditions are suitable. The essential requirements from the practical and economic point of view are :(1) a large ore body or wide regular vein;(2) a strong country rock;(3) a good parting between the ore and the rock to avoid undue contamination of the ore. Holes to take up to 2-inch diameter cartridges may be drilled. Since the drilling of long holes is relatively expensive, high-strength, high-density gelatinous explosives are usually employed so that the maximum burden can be placed on each hole. For this reason also, the largest diameter of explosive cartridge that can be loaded into the holes should be used to obtain the greatest possible loading density. 4, record 18, English, - long%2Dhole%20blasting

Attachment should be as high in the tree as practical and certainly at or above the lowest branches. Again, guy wires should be attached to stakes driven 18 inches into undisturbed soil. Most large trees and shrubs require support staking or guying to hold them erect against buffeting winds. Wood or metal stakes are usual for single-trunked trees up to 3 inches in caliper and provide better support if used in pairs. Guy wiring with turnbuckles is used for anchoring large plant materials, and guy placement ordinarily follows either a triangular or rectangular pattern around the main stem. Both types of support require regular inspection for proper tauntness--up to a year for woody plants.... 2, record 20, English, - guying

A plume is a local fluctuation in the fluid temperature... which detaches itself at more or less regular intervals from the boundaries responsible for the temperature gradient in the fluid. Plumes exist mainly in high Prandtl number fluids, for the following reason. For a fluid to have a high Prandtl number means that its kinematic viscosity is much greater than its thermal diffusivity. The effectiveness of thermal diffusion is therefore low, permitting high gradients of temperature and also of density to exist for a long time before relaxing. This causes large fluctuations in the Archimedean force which drives the plumes. 3, record 22, English, - plume

A spring that has periods of relatively large continuous discharge at more or less regular and frequent intervals. Such springs may be classified as perennial or intermittent. Although the discharge of such a spring resembles somewhat that of a geyser in its rhythmic action, such discharge is due to an entirely different cause, such as siphon action. 2, record 26, English, - ebbing%20and%20flowing%20spring
