ASDAR, operating in conjunction with meteorological satellites, has proved to be a versatile tool in obtaining meteorological data automatically from flights over both oceans and continents, especially over areas not serviced by meteorological stations. In addition, during the ascent and descent phases of the aircraft, observations at regular pressure intervals provide a detailed vertical atmospheric temperature profile near the airports. The meteorological data provided by this system has proved to be very useful for improving the weather forecasting service.

Acetylene lighting was also used by railroad locomotives and automobiles in the late l9th and early 20th centuries. Although they provided better illumination than oil-burning headlights, acetylene headlights were troublesome and a maintenance headache. The acetylene was generated by dripping water on calcium carbide, and the regular cleaning out of the residue of calcium hydroxide was not a pleasant task.
