In areas of very deep mining, as additional weight is supported by the pillars on the coal face, stresses may so build up that the yield point is reached. If the coal pillars, the roof, or the floor are able to yield gradually, the effects of the stresses are relieved by floor heaving, or by pillar or roof failure. Where the coal or the associated rocks are particularly strong and depths are much above average, these stresses may be relieved by rock bursts, which are relatively violent outbursts of the coal into the rooms and entries. Frequently, a large volume of gas (usually methane) is suddenly released during a rock burst in a coal mine. 8, record 14, English, - rock%20burst
Record number: 14, Textual support number: 1 OBS
for "coal burst" : Rock bursts and "coal bursts" in coal mines are generally designated by the term "bumps" or "bounces". A large proportion of these "bumps" or "bounces" are actually "coal bursts" due to fracturing of pillars and remnants and need not involve any fracturing of roof or floor rock. 4, record 14, English, - rock%20burst
Record number: 14, Textual support number: 2 OBS
for "air blast" : In former years rock bursts were sometimes referred to as "air blasts". This name originated from the fact that large quantities of rock loosened by some of the larger rock bursts displaced quantities of air, with the result that a blast of air passed through the mine workings. 4, record 14, English, - rock%20burst

The energy required for this storage comes from the hydrolysis of poly-P, which explains the accelerated release of phosphate into the medium. In this process acidogenesis is the limiting step, which explains why free acetate is not found in anaerobic zones. 1, record 26, English, - limiting%20step

Reactions that release a large quantity of free energy are those that have a very large negative [delta] G and create much disorder. Such reactions will have a strong tendency to occur, although the rate at which they do so will depend on other factors, such as the availability of specific enzymes. Conversely, reactions with a positive value of [delta] G create net order in the universe and cannot occur spontaneously. Such energetically unfavorable reactions will happen only if they are coupled to a second reaction with a negative [delta] G so large that the [delta] G of the entire process is negative. 3, record 30, English, - free%20energy

4, record 30, French, - %C3%A9nergie%20libre

The Fire Radiative Power product(FRP, in megawatts) provides information on the measured radiant heat output of detected fires. It has been demonstrated in small-scale experimental fires that the amount of radiant heat energy liberated per unit time(the Fire Radiative Power) is related to the rate at which fuel is being consumed. This is a direct result of the combustion process, whereby carbon-based fuel is oxidised to CO2 with the release of a certain "heat yield. "Therefore, measuring this FRP and integrating it over the lifetime of the fire provides an estimate of the total Fire Radiative Energy(FRE), which for wildfires should be proportional to the total mass of fuel biomass combusted. 1, record 32, English, - fire%20radiative%20power

It often involves workers using a padlock to keep a switch in the "off" position, or to isolate the energy of moving parts. This prevents electric shock, sudden movement of components, chemical combustion, falling counterweights, and other actions that can endanger lives. Lockout is a physical way to ensure that the energy source is de-energized, deactivated, or otherwise inoperable. 2, record 37, English, - lock%2Dout

3, record 37, French, - verrouillage

reactive (reactivity): As applied to a chemical species, the term expresses a kinetic property. A species is said to be more reactive or to have a higher reactivity in some given context than some other (reference) species if it has a larger rate constant for a specified elementary reaction. The term has meaning only by reference to some explicitly stated or implicitly assumed set of conditions. It is not to be used for reactions or reaction patterns of compounds in general. The term is also more loosely used as a phenomenological description not restricted to elementary reactions. When applied in this sense the property under consideration, may reflect not only rate, but also equilibrium, constants. 5, record 53, English, - reactivity

6, record 53, French, - r%C3%A9activit%C3%A9

Coupling is brought about when an enzyme causes a substrate that is to be consumed... to react with one of the cell' s small-molecule energy donors(say, ATP) to give rise to an energized activated substrate molecule. The subsequent decomposition of this activated substrate in the synthetic reaction will release significant energy, which will result in the synthetic reaction.... The need for cells to carry on simultaneously many different coupled reactions requires cells to devote a significant part of their total metabolic activity to the constant replenishment of their ATP supply. In animal cells and in most bacteria, the formation of ATP is coupled with the breakdown of food molecules that are even more rich in energy. The ideal reusable launcher would be analogous to a normal aircraft in that it would be able to take off from many possible bases on Earth, enter the desired orbital plane, accelerate to orbital velocity, release its payload, de-orbit, dissipate its kinetic energy and land at the take-off base to be readied for its next flight after a quick turn-around. The vehicle would maintain physical integrity during a mission, would be flown ’very often’, and its cost per flight would be compatible with the value of the missions undertaken. The vehicle would also be able to abort its mission any time in the case of mishap and land intact with its payload. ... it has long been known that to compress air to high pressures a staged process should be used, compressing air to first 50 bars, then to 150 bars then three hundred and so on. This technique, commonly employed by the air and gas liquefaction industries, uses a fraction of the energy used to compress the gas in one operation. The secret of the compressed air motor is simply to reverse the process-decompress the air in stages and in so doing efficiently release energy at each point in the chain. 2, record 64, English, - compressed%2Dair%20engine

Although prominence equilibria are maintained on a long period of time, many quiescent prominences do ultimately erupt in a dramatic event lasting only a few hours. Incredibly, the eruption always occurs outwards, away from the surface, indicating that the magnetic field which originally supported the prominence has suddenly released its stored energy. This energy release is sufficient to drive the dense plasma outwards against the Sun's huge gravitational pull. After the eruption, most of the material does eventually fall back down towards the surface and the prominence will often reform again at the same location over the course of a few days. 2, record 72, English, - eruptive%20prominence

... organic anions are released in the fermentation medium by fermenting bacteria. They are "transitory end products" because they act as electron sinks in biological energy conserving redox reactions. They have to be looked at as waste molecules, rich in reducing equivalents if these reactions are considered from the hydrogen transfer point of view. Typical examples of these organic "transitory end products" are lactate and volatile fatty acid anions such as propionate, n-and iso-butyrate, n-and iso-valerate. Because of this, the fermentation of soluble organic matter is classically referred to as "acidogenesis". It should, however, be strongly emphasized here that acidogenesis in a strict sense only means the release in the fermentation medium of organic acid anions! 1, record 78, English, - acidogenesis

In recent years, fluidized bed combustion of biomass has become commercial practice. Two types of combustors have been developed :(1) the conventional dense-phase or bubbling bed combustor, and(2) the circulating fluidized bed combustor. Fluidized bed combustors offer several advantages. There is a high mass of inert material in the combustor, capable of absorbing energy from fuels that combust in a highly volatile fashion. The bed media contain sufficient energy that very wet fuels(e. g., 65% MCg) can be burned successfully.... Conventional dense-phase fluidized bed systems have grate release levels in the vicinity of 5. 6 GJ/m2 grate equivalent and 470 MJ/m3 of volume(Envirosphere, 1980). Rates of heat release for circulating fluidized beds are somewhat higher. 1, record 83, English, - bubbling%20bed%20combustor

Two systems are utilized for oxygen generation : cryogenic air separation and absorption-based separation.... The adsorption-based oxygen plant yields a gas product and is suitable only for onsite generation.... adsorption systems separate air at ambient temperatures using molecular sieve adsorbents. The adsorbent picks up nitrogen and other impurities at the system feed pressure, while the product oxygen passes straight through the bed. After the bed is saturated with nitrogen, it is regenerated by lowering the pressure to release the adsorbed components. Biological phosphorus removal is dependant mainly on manipulation of the ability of Acinetobacter sp.. to release phosphate in anaerobic conditions and absorb it in aerobic ones. ... The ortho-phosphate is metabolised by the cell and excess quantities are stored inside the cell as polyphosphate. This is called LUXURY UPTAKE of phosphate. 2, record 90, English, - luxury%20uptake
Record number: 90, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Biological phosphorus removal is based on the phenomenon called "luxury uptake. "This effect is observed when certain microorganisms, primarily acinetobacter, are subject to anaerobic conditions, followed by aerobic conditions. Under anaerobic conditions, acinetobacter experience a stress due to a lack of oxygen. They release phosphorus and take on soluble COD. In the subsequent aerobic zone, the same microbes take on additional phosphorus to replenish the energy resources. In what may be interpreted as a "preventive measure, "the microbes take on 2. 5 times more phosphorus than required for biosynthesis. The microbes effectively prepare themselves for future stress situations(i. e., low O2 concentrations) by storing more-than-normal amounts of phosphorus in the form of polyphosphates as an energy source. 3, record 90, English, - luxury%20uptake
