CONT

A social impact bond(SIB) is a contract with a public sector commissioner in which it pays for improved social outcomes. [Investment] is raised from socially interested investors. The investment capital is used to fund service providers, with government agreeing to provide a return to investors from a portion of the projected cost savings if the intervention is successful.

OBS

The concept of "socially responsible bond" is more generic since it does not necessarily mean that the returns are based on the achievement of specific goals.

DEF

The strategy of using debt to finance a company’s assets.

CONT

For example, a corporation with equity of $5 million issues bonds with a face value of $2 million. The corporation is trading on the equity in that the interest of the bonds, as a percent, may be less than the percent return on total capital($7 million). Thus, the corporation is leveraging its total investment. Trading on the equity increases the risk of bankruptcy because the fixed-interest charges on debt may exceed the return on total capital.

DEF

The opportunity cost of using investment resources in a project rather than in their next best alternative use; usually expressed in the form of an interest rate. The reduction in non-project benefits in relation to project objectives that is a result of using capital in the project. In practice, usually a weighted average calculation of the cost of securing project capital from various sources. In financial analysis, the weighted average cost to the firm or farm of equity capital and of borrowed capital from likely sources. In economic analysis, usually the weighted average cost of capital to the economy as a whole, but sometimes the weighted average cost of capital to the public sector. The rate at which benefits and costs are discounted in calculating the net present worth, the net benefit-investment ratio, or the benefit-cost ratio. The cut-off rate for project analysis, and hence the minimum acceptable internal rate of return.

DEF
