English

Subject field(s)
  • Endocrine System and Metabolism
DEF

A state of latent impairment of carbohydrate metabolism, in which the criteria for diabetes mellitus are not all satisfied ...

CONT

Prediabetes is a term used to distinguish people who are at increased risk of developing diabetes. People with prediabetes have impaired fasting glucose(IFG) or impaired glucose tolerance(IGT). Some people may have both IFG and IGT.... Progression to diabetes among those with prediabetes is not inevitable. Studies suggest that weight loss and increased physical activity among people with prediabetes prevent or delay diabetes and may return blood glucose levels to normal. People with prediabetes are already at increased risk for other adverse health outcomes such as heart disease and stroke.

OBS

The identical twin of a diabetic or a person whose parents are both diabetic is felt to have prediabetes. Most people do not know they are prediabetic until they develop diabetes.

Subject field(s)
  • Dietetics
CONT

In an effort to lose weight, some people will try anything, including ill-advised weight loss methods like crash dieting. A crash diet is a diet that severely restricts caloric intake. In fact, these diets often restrict caloric intake so much that the dieter is bordering on starvation. In return for practically starving themselves, dieters are promised dramatic weight loss in just days or weeks. For example, a crash diet may offer dieters the chance to lose 10 to 20 pounds in just five to seven days and even more in the weeks to come.

CONT

There’s a lot to worry about with crash dieting, as it deprives a person of the nutrients and calories they need for optimum health and survival. Many people think of calories negatively, but a person actually needs a certain number of calories to maintain basic bodily functions, such as breathing. When a person consumes too few calories because of a crash diet, they may actually put their health at serious risk. Many crash diets require a person to consume less than 1200 calories per day, and some even go as low as 700 or 800 calories daily. For the average person, this is simply too few calories.

Many factors are responsible for the loss of weight or "shrink" of calves, feeder and slaughter cattle during marketing. As shrinkage increases, the potential for improving net returns from calves, feeders and fed cattle decreases. Shrinkage directly affects the income of all cattle producers. Shrinkage can be reduced through better handling techniques, attention to environment and diet, market planning and an appreciation of animal psychology. This module discusses how shrinkage effects net return and how producers can reduce losses from shrinkage.

  • General Conduct of Military Operations
CONT

Fourth generation warfare(4GW) is a concept in American military doctrine... used to describe warfare's return to a decentralized form. In terms of generational modern warfare, the fourth generation signifies the nation states’ loss of their monopoly on combat forces, returning in a sense to the uncontrolled combat of pre-modern times. The simplest definition includes any war in which one of the major participants is not a state but rather a violent ideological network. Fourth generation wars are characterized by a blurring of the lines between war and politics, soldier and civilian, peace and conflict, battlefield and safety.... Fourth generation warfare is defined as conflicts which involve the following elements : high technology, terrorism, a non-national or transnational base, a direct attack on the enemy's culture, highly sophisticated psychological warfare, especially through manipulation of the media.

CONT

Fourth generation warfare involves operations against non-state combatants or remnants of armies in a battle space where there are no definable battlefields or front lines, where deadly threats emerge suddenly and disappear just as quickly and where combatants mingle freely with non-combatants. The division between combatant, criminal opportunist and civilian is often blurred.

Shares which meet the requirements of the exception are often referred to as financial difficulty shares or distress preferred shares. These shares allow the creditor to convert debt to shares and thus receive dividends which are deductible in computing taxable income as opposed to receiving fully taxable interest income. The creditor can then charge a lower dividend rate than the interest rate and achieve the same after-tax rate of return. Although the lower dividends are not deductible by the debtor, this is not usually of consequence given the financial difficulty and resulting loss situation.
