The Shuttle Remote Manipulator System consists of a shoulder, elbow and wrist joint separated by an upper and lower arm boom. The Space Shuttle is launched in an upright position, with thrust provided by the three Space Shuttle engines and the two SRB. After about 2 minutes, the two boosters are spent and are separated from the external tank. They fall into the ocean at predetermined points and are recovered for reuse.

The... stealth buoy... has been designed to lie on the ocean floor until it rises to the surface in response to a sound, such as the noise of a ship's propeller. It can monitor an area within a kilometre or two of its placement, transmit data to a receiving station, and then return to the ocean floor to wait for the next event. The air-deployable buoy is a one metre long cylinder and weighs 11-kilograms. It contains batteries, a GPS [global positioning system] device and an Iridium satellite transceiver that can communicate over very long distances, and it is designed to work to a depth of 300 metres... Electronics are, perhaps, the biggest growing area of Formula One technology in current times, and their existence has made bi-directional telemetry an incredible tool of the modern age. The cars operate on a "fly-by-wire" system, which means driver's controls, such as the throttle and the gearchange paddles on the steering wheel, send an electronic signal to the engine and gearbox. That electronic signal, and any others relating to set-up on the car, can now be modified from the pits, with a return burst of information. The change is indicated to the driver on an on-board display, and he must accept the change by pressing a button on the steering wheel.

An autopilot system operates in the principle of gyroscopic rigidity in space. The system incorporates two gyroscopes to control flight in the longitudinal, lateral and vertical axes of the aircraft. If the aircraft deviates from the programmed attitude, the system computer detects the deviation and issues commands to the servo motors which move the primary flight control surfaces as required to return the aircraft to the required flight attitude. This is called aerodynamic response.

Should the automated docking system fail, Russia would launch two cosmonauts to the station on a Soyuz about 15 days later. The crew would dock with Zvezda and assemble a backup teleoperated rendezvous control system(TORU), that would be used to dock the modules. The crew would return to Earth shortly after the modules were docked.
