A row of windows installed vertically, or nearly so, above a roof.

A series of windows on both sides of a single storey factory roof, which admit daylight, and sometimes also provide ventilation. The monitor is a linear version of the lantern used in classical domes. Monitor frames... and roof trusses are shaped to include the monitor as an integral part of the steel frame.

Lanterneau : Noter que les grands dictionnaires donnent un sens restreint au terme "lanterneau" (voir la fiche "lanterneau/lantern light"); mais le concept ayant évolué, l'usage a précédé les dictionnaires et a étendu le sens de "lanterneau" à tout dispositif constituant une prise de jour en toiture.

Puits de lumière : Hormis la publicité et la langue parlée au Québec, "puits de lumière" ne trouve pas d'attestation dans son sens concret et général entendu ici (voir la fiche "skylight/prise de jour en toiture"). Cependant son usage répandu et l'absence d'un terme véritablement propre nous semblent justifier parfaitement son emploi.

Natural illumination in an industrial building may be increased considerably by the addition of one or more monitors along the length or width of the building. Such arrangements are usually called high-low bay roofs.

The term "monitored roof" has also been applied to sawtooth roofs with windows.
