Record 1 2024-11-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Roofs (Building Elements)
DEF

A roof having a double slope on all four sides, the lower slope being much steeper.

CONT

The aesthetic of gambrels can be compared to a gable roof fused with a mansard style roof. It has the simplicity of a gable(a roof style that normally has two sides) and the complexity of a mansard, which is traditionally a four-sided roof style. Where a gable has two sides with one panel each, the gambrel has two sides with two panels each. For comparison, a mansard style roof has four sides, each with two panels.

OBS

mansard roof: designation standardized by ISO.

Subject field(s)
  • Roofs (Building Elements)
  • Building Hardware
  • Waterproofing (Construction)
CONT

Skylights, chimneys, and roof hatches. Rectangular penetrations can be handled with sheet metal flashings in some cases, and with "preformed" curb flashings in others... The base flashing is rigidly connected to the roof panel with washered screws... The upslope side of a rectangular penetration is a bit more difficult. The panel itself must end a sufficient distance from the penetration to allow room for a cricket, of diverter, to direct the flow of water around the penetration. This cricket flashing must be inserted beneath the upslope panel and sealed to it with butyl tape.

CONT

Cricket flashing. A cricket is a small, sloped structure made of metal and designed to drain moisture away from a chimney. It is usually placed at the back of a chimney. It is important that this structure be weather tight. It is best inspected from close proximity on the roof when possible.

CONT

cricket. 1. Small, false roof or the elevation of part of a roof behind an obstacle, as a watershed built behind a chimney or other roof projection; 2. Watertight flashing over such a construction.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Tectonics
CONT

In a thrust environment, the structural association is: two flat segments (called the floor and roof thrusts), connected by several parallel ramp segments. The rock masses bounded by these faults are called horses, and the entire structural association is a duplex.

CONT

duplex fault zone : A structural complex consisting of a roof thrust at the top and a floor thrust at the base, within which a suite of more steeply dipping imbricate thrust faults thicken and shorten the intervening panel of rock...

OBS

As opposed to "sole thrust" or "floor thrust."

OBS

roof thrust: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Tectonique
CONT

Bivouac tent. This little tent... is meant to be carried instead of a plastic bivy bag. Made from lightest materials and complete with pegs and poles, it weighs less than 1. 5kg. It does, however, make a perfectly adequate backpacking tent for one or two people and, despite the lack of ventilation, suffers little from condensation owing to the roof panel being made from 60g/m tent Goretex.

CONT
