DEF

gable roof; V-roof : A pitched roof with two inclined planes having equal angles that meet at a peak in the center and terminate at a vertical gable;...

DEF

A common pitched roof with two gables and one ridge somewhat similar to a saddle.

DEF

saddle roof; saddleback roof: A ridged roof with gable ends; may have a straight or curved ridge; ...

OBS

The gable roof, with its inverted V shape, is probably the most prevalent type of roof.

OBS

saddle roof, saddleback roof ... typically the term is used for a relatively short gable roof in an unusual location, such as on top of a tower.

OBS

Note that the "V" roof here is an inverted "V" roof.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Toitures (Éléments du bâtiment)
DEF

DEF

An adhered waterproof membrane installed under shingled roofing, around skylights or along eaves to avoid leaks caused by ice dams and icicles.

CONT

When snow and ice melt, trapped water can infiltrate to damage the roof deck and interior. Ice Guard [trademark] is installed under shingled roofing to prevent water damage from ice dams. ... Applied under the shingles, Ice Guard forms a long-lasting waterproof barrier, unlike normal shingle underlayment. Ice Guard is warranted to protect against water leakage, where it has been applied, for the warranted life of the new shingled roof.

OBS

Icicles and ice dams. An adhered waterproof membrane is needed under steep roofing such as shingles at valleys, around skylights and other large penetrations, and along eaves to avoid leaks when icings back up water in these places.

OBS

An ice dam is a build up of ice and water that works its way under shingles/shakes. When snow/ice from the peak melts(caused by warm spots in the attic or the sun), water slowly runs down the roof.... Most roofs have a single layer of underlayment(i. e. builder's felt) that protects against moisture penetration and in many northern states an extra waterproofing membrane is required by building codes.

DEF

The part of a rafter which overhangs the wall.

CONT

A rafter is a sloping board used to support a roof; the rafter runs from the top of the wall up to the peak of the roof. A rafter tail is the end of the rafter that visibly projects out from the wall. Rafter tails may be structural(the actual rafter projects from the wall) or false(a secondary board is applied under the eave to imitate the rafter tail).

OBS

Do not confuse with the closely-related term "lookout rafter," which designates a rafter, bracket or joist which projects beyond the side of a building and supports an overhanging portion of the roof.
