ROOF PRESSURE [11 records]

Record 1 2019-10-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Modern Construction Methods
  • Roofs (Building Elements)
DEF

The practice of providing regularly spaced or continuous openings at a roof perimeter.

OBS

This [practice] to some extent relieves water vapour pressure or dries out the roofing system, usually combined with venting channels in the insulation and stack venting towards the centre of the roof.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Procédés de construction modernes
  • Toitures (Éléments du bâtiment)
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Occupation Names (General)
  • Mining Operations
DEF

[One who] operates machine to install roof-support bolts in underground mine : Positions safety jack to support roof until bolts can be installed. Drives machine into position, inserts bit in drill chuck, and starts drill. Moves lever to advance bit into roof at specified distance from rib or adjacent bolt. Removes bit from chuck and replaces with bolt. Starts hydraulic action which forces bolt into hole. Starts rotation of chuck to turn bolt and open expansion head to exert pressure upon rock formation. Tests bolt for specified tension, using torque wrench.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Désignations des emplois (Généralités)
  • Exploitation minière
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mining Operations
CONT

The driving of a narrow roadway results in the development of a pressure arch over the excavation. The strata within the arch bend slightly and cease to support the overlying beds, and the load is transferred to the solid coal or rock along the sides. The wider the roadway, the greater is the span of the arch and its height at the crown. A similar but larger pressure arch is formed across a longwall face, with one leg resting on the solid coal and the other on the solid pack behind the coal face.

PHR

Roadway pressure arch, roof pressure arch, span of pressure arch, width of pressure arch.

Pressure Formers. Beloit modified their design of suction former to produce the Hydraulic Former.... It had been found that the pressure differential was easier to control when the vacuum system was removed and hydraulic pressure increased within the forming lid. Subsequently, the hydraulic channel was simplified utilizing an adjustable throat as the flow control. The only other operating variables are the area of the roof(which helps to control forming pressure) and the location of the couch roll.

CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Fixed Rescue Facilities (fire)
CONT

The automatic electric water system with a capacity of not less than 5 gpm at 30 pounds pressure, and 3/4" garden hose with ordinary nozzle, will reach the roof of the ordinary farm building. This is a minimum of fire protection and is not recommended or recognized by the Underwriters.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Installations fixes de secours (incendies)
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Estimating (Construction)
  • Civil Architecture
CONT

There are two main types of pressurized structure but really unambiguous descriptions of them do not yet exist :(a) those that are held up by ribs or inflated "tyres" and therefore do not need an air lock to allow inward or outward access;(b) those that do need an air lock, have no inflated ribs and therefore must be held up by an internal air pressure slightly above atmospheric.... The ribbed structures are called "air inflated" and the non-ribbed ones "air supported".... The air-supported structures... are often used as a temporary shelter.... The edges must be weighted, or buried in soil which comes to the same thing, so as to counterbalance the upthrust on the roof skin of the small excess pressure.

OBS
