A plaza for all seasons. People who live in, work in or visit Hull, Quebec, have a beautiful new public space to enjoy, thanks to a PWGSC [Public Works and Government Services Canada]-managed restoration and redesign project. The newly reopened plaza at Parc du Portage is popular among employees at lunchtime, but is also drawing strollers in the evening and bringing new life into the downtown area. The plaza is located between Phases I and II of the Government of Canada Place du Portage office complex and the provincial/municipal Maison du Citoyen building. The plaza is a few minutes’ walk from the Museum of Civilization, one of the national capital' s major visitor attractions. An underground parking garage owned by the Government of Canada is situated beneath the plaza. The restoration and redesign project had two main components--repair of the waterproof membrane of the garage roof, which had been leaking, and restoration of the plaza. Improvements to the plaza included the addition of more fountains in the pool, and the construction of a low wall around the pool providing places to sit. At night, innovative new lighting casts a shimmering reflection onto the nearby building walls. The plaza should also be a hit in winter because of a versatile design that allows the pool fountains to be dismantled and the pool to be converted into a skating rink.

The first fire occurred... when maintenance personnel were heating synthetic tar in a portable kettle to repair the roof of a maintenance shop at Hanford Site. A worker draining tar from the kettle into a bucket noticed that the surface of the tar had caught fire in the bucket.

IPI elastic membrane is a micro-porous film that prevents water from penetrating the film but allows trapped moisture to escape. This breathable, flexible polymeric membrane is designed for use with reinforcing fabric and provides the ultimate protection for roofs. Being liquid applied, it produces a seamless water barrier that fully adheres to the roof deck.

Deteriorated or damaged roofing. This condition is difficult to repair. Never build up or cover the old or damaged roofing with a series of felt layers. This may change the drainage pattern of the roof and create more problems. Remove damaged roofing. Clean the surfaces in and around the cut-out area. Now cut pieces of felt to neatly fit the cut-out area. The number of felt strips placed should equal the number of layers of felt removed.

ice dam: This term was submitted to our language information service and appeared in the following sentence: "An ice dam is being installed at the back of the building to stop any ice and snow from falling on the deck." However, since we could not validate this use of the term in any other source, we do not recommend its usage. An "ice dam" is normally (and correctly) used to designate a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of an inadequately insulated and ventilated roof and prevents melting snow (water) from draining off the roof, causing ice damming (in French "digue de glace").
