Coated Felts. Some current thinking favours the use of coated organic roofing felts instead of saturated felts for the construction of built-up roofing membranes. In this case, the bitumen required for waterproofing has already been applied in a uniform coating at the manufacturing plant, and application is essentially the sticking together of sufficient layers to give the strength required. The heavier grades of coated felt have been used for many years in this and other countries as a single-layer roofing material on simply pitched roofs of barns and sheds. In more sophisticated roofing systems, several layers of coated felt are used with hot or cold adhesives and a surface protection of gravel or weathering coat of clay-stabilized asphalt emulsion. 2, record 6, English, - coated%20felt

Feutres recouverts d'enduit. 2, record 6, French, - feutre%20enduit

There are several application techniques that can be used when the asphalt is installed by mopping. The modified bitumen sheet can be rolled, scrolled or flopped into the asphalt. Regardless of the application technique employed, the crucial factor is that the modified bitumen sheet make complete contact and embed in the hot asphalt. This can be accomplished by lightly brooming the modified bitumen sheet immediately after it has been installed. It is also good roofing practice to “scuff in” the side and end laps to assure that they are completely sealed. 1, record 10, English, - modified%20bitumen%20sheet

1, record 10, French, - feuille%20de%20bitume%20modifi%C3%A9

Although heat is also a factor in the deterioration of asphalt on a roof, the real source of decay is the energy carried by the ultra-violet(UV) light of the sun, combined with the ready supply of oxygen in ozone. The "links" in asphalt molecular chains are hydrogen. The molecular bond is overcome by the strong attraction of the oxygen, which pulls the hydrogen away from the asphalt molecules. This process is called photo-oxidation, and these breaks in the "aliphatic" chain results in the shrinkage cracking common to asphalt. This phenomenon is commonly called "alligatoring" in roofing parlance, a term which describes the similarity of aged asphalt surfaces to an alligator's back. 3, record 28, English, - alligatoring

A study of a number of roofs in which membrane shrinkage had been observed revealed that movement had taken place at one of two planes : at the membrane-insulation interface or at the insulation-deck interface. In certain cases both appeared to have been involved. Examples of the first type consisted of installations where coated base sheets had been placed dry(without asphalt) over polystyrene insulation without adhering. Movement at the insulation-deck interface resulted from improper attachment of the roofing to the deck because of lack of nailing to wooden decks or inadequate adhesion to most others. 3, record 35, English, - coated%20base%20sheet

2, record 35, French, - feuille%20de%20base%20enduite
