ROOFING BOND [3 records]

Record 1 2019-05-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Industrial Ceramics
  • Natural Construction Materials
CONT

Typical structural clay products are building brick, paving brick, terra-cotta facing tile, roofing tile, and drainage pipe. These objects are made from commonly occurring natural materials, which are mixed with water, formed into the desired shape, and fired in a kiln in order to give the clay mixture a permanent bond.

Subject field(s)
  • Glues and Adhesives (Industries)
  • Petroleum Asphalts
  • Waterproofing (Construction)
  • Roofs (Building Elements)
DEF

An asphaltic product applied as an adhesive to seal the laps of roofing felt to each other.

CONT

Tapco's Tite Seal Cold Process Lap Cement is a high quality, fibered asphalt, solvent blend, of medium brushing consistency that provides a tough, permanent seal for laps of rolled roofing. It provides an even tighter longer lasting bond than hot asphalt without the disagreeable odor or smoke. This cold process product may also be used as an extra heavy bodied roof coating to seal cracks or resaturate old roofing layers. In some instances it may be used to patch roofs because of the extreme bonding quality of the product.

OBS

lap cement: term officially approved by the Lexicon Project Committee (New Brunswick).

English

Subject field(s)
  • Roofs (Building Elements)
  • Inspection for Defects (Materials Engineering)
DEF

Surface cracking due to oxidation and shrinkage stresses, which shows as repetitive mounding of an asphalt surface, resembling the hide of an alligator.

CONT

Although heat is also a factor in the deterioration of asphalt on a roof, the real source of decay is the energy carried by the ultra-violet(UV) light of the sun, combined with the ready supply of oxygen in ozone. The "links" in asphalt molecular chains are hydrogen. The molecular bond is overcome by the strong attraction of the oxygen, which pulls the hydrogen away from the asphalt molecules. This process is called photo-oxidation, and these breaks in the "aliphatic" chain results in the shrinkage cracking common to asphalt. This phenomenon is commonly called "alligatoring" in roofing parlance, a term which describes the similarity of aged asphalt surfaces to an alligator's back.

DEF

Durcissement et rétrécissement causés par l'oxydation des enduits bitumineux exposés, qui produisent de petits monticules entre des fissures profondes qui donnent l'aspect d'une peau de crocodile.
