Aujourd'hui on place des lanterneaux sur des toitures en terrasse de façon à obtenir un éclairage zénithal des locaux placés en dessous [...] Les lanterneaux ont très souvent la forme de petits dômes translucides en plexiglas que l'on peut soulever pour obtenir une aération haute. Le lanterneau est posé sur un cadre métallique raccordé à l'étanchéité de la toiture et en saillie sur le plan de la terrasse.

Le lanterneau - que nous appelons communément "puits de lumière" - laisse pénétrer la lumière de cinq à huit fois plus que les fenêtres ordinaires.

Lanterneau : Noter que les grands dictionnaires donnent un sens restreint au terme "lanterneau" (voir la fiche "lanterneau/lantern light"); mais le concept ayant évolué, l'usage a précédé les dictionnaires et a étendu le sens de "lanterneau" à tout dispositif constituant une prise de jour en toiture.

Puits de lumière : Hormis la publicité et la langue parlée au Québec, "puits de lumière" ne trouve pas d'attestation dans son sens concret et général entendu ici (voir la fiche "skylight/prise de jour en toiture"). Cependant son usage répandu et l'absence d'un terme véritablement propre nous semblent justifier parfaitement son emploi.

Monitored roofs are sometimes used for daylighting and ventilating the interior. A monitor is a row of windows installed vertically, or nearly so, above a roof.

Natural illumination in an industrial building may be increased considerably by the addition of one or more monitors along the length or width of the building. Such arrangements are usually called high-low bay roofs.
