ROOT INJURY [4 records]

Record 1 2024-10-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Dietetics
CONT

... vegetarians construct diets that avoid certain kinds of food. The limitations vegetarians place on themselves can be classified by seven categories of food : red meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, dairy products, root and leaf vegetables, and fruits/nuts/grains.... the strictest form of vegetarian, the fruitarian, abstains from all but one of the seven categories of food—the fruit of plants. This means that they can eat fruit vegetables, such as peppers and cucumbers, as well as nuts and some grains. The aim is to avoid injury to either animals or plants... Moreover, the fruit is preferably consumed in a raw, uncooked state...

Subject field(s)
  • Plant Diseases
CONT

Boron Deficiency. A small quantity of boron is required for normal growth of most plants. For some there is not much leeway between necessary and toxic amounts; other plants require or tolerate large amounts. Deficiency symptoms vary with the crop... Beets, turnips, other root crops. Black Heart, Brown Heart. Roots have dark spots; plants are gradually stunted and dwarfed; leaves are small, variegated, twisted. The interior of the beet or turnip has a dark brown to nearly black water-soaked area, sometimes with a hollow center. The amount of borax that can be added without injury depends on type of soil and moisture content.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Maladies des plantes
CONT

DEF

... longitudinal cracks that occur in the bark and wood often extending several feet up and down and penetrating several inches into the trunks of affected trees.

CONT

The colder the temperature the wider the cracks may open. Sudden drops in temperature do not appear to increase the appearance or width of cracks when compared with slow temperature changes. Soil moisture levels do not appear to affect ’frost cracking’ of previously ’frost crack’ injured trees, while wrapping or painting(using a white latex paint) appear to reduce this problem. In addition, wrapping and painting reduce sunscald, a trunk injury which may lead to frost cracking in future years. ’Frost cracks’ start from old wounds resulting from trunk injury, branch stubs, basal sprouts or root death.

  • Plant Diseases
DEF

A member of the family Curculionidae (Coleoptera) which causes serious damage in conifer seedlings and saplings, forest regeneration and Christmas tree plantations.

OBS

Terminal weevils are usually grouped according to their mode of injury :(a) seedling-debarking weevils(pales weevils, pitch-eating weevils),(b) pine reproduction weevils,(c) root collar weevils(pine root collar weevil, Warren's collar weevil), and(d) terminal weevil(white pine weevil).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Insectes, mille-pattes, araignées et scorpions
  • Maladies des plantes
DEF
