When a tree seed germinates, the first(primary) root grows down in the soil in response to gravity. Secondary roots then branch off horizontally, with subsequent branching into tertiary roots, etc. Absorption of water and mineral nutrients is the function of the very fine, non-woody roots(the feeder roots). With continued growth, each root will lose its ability for absorption. These larger woody roots then function as the transport system for water and nutrients from the new feeder roots to the stem. They are also the tree's system of anchorage and a food storage area. The resulting system thus consists of several main transport roots that extend radically and horizontally from the tree base and divide into ever smaller roots, each ending in a dense mass of fine feeder roots. 2, record 1, English, - feeder%20roots

1, record 1, French, - racine%20non%20ligneuse

Fluorescent or LEO lighting will simulate sunlight, and an atmospheric control system will maintain set levels of carbon dioxide and humidity while scrubbing volatile organic compounds, such as ethylene, that can accumulate and inhibit plant growth. Plant transpiration water, collected from a dehumidifier system, can be recirculated back into the root matrix. Root canal filling--Filling of root canals is necessary to prevent re-infection of the canal system. Over the years a variety of materials and techniques have been used, but the technical quality of the treatment is variable and root fillings may be produced that contain voids and/or do not fill the canal system effectively. Investigations are ongoing into the ability of a variety of filling techniques and materials to fill and seal the root canal system. 4, record 27, English, - root%20canal%20filling

Choose a tree with a good strong root system, that is, with a healthy main root and many fine feeder roots. Being able to see the roots is the main advantage of buying bareroot!... It's very important to keep the roots of bareroot stock moist. Soaking the roots in a bucket of water for an hour before planting is an excellent idea. After this soaking, handle the tree quickly so it doesn’t dry out, especially if it's a windy day. Any bareroot stock bought before you’ve prepared a planting area should be heeled into a moist planting medium. Sawdust works well for this because you can lift the plant out easily, with minimal damage to roots. 1, record 39, English, - bareroot%20stock

Glucomannan is high in fiber, essential for cleaning the digestive system. [It] is taken from the Konnyaku root and is from the same family as the yam, which is 100 percent natural dietary fiber without calories. Since lack of fiber is a major cause for the high incidence of growing gastrointestinal disorders, it is a valuable herb. It helps reduce cholesterol, helps maintain regularity and promotes bowel health. It helps to normalize blood sugar, to relieve stress on the pancreas and to discourage blood sugar abnormalities, such as hypoglycemia. [It] absorbs toxic substances produced during digestion and elimination. It binds toxic material and eliminates them before they can be absorbed into the blood stream. [It] acts as a prevention of chronic disease and a weight control agent. As a diet aid, it expands to about 50 times its original volume when used with a large glass of water. 3, record 48, English, - glucomannan

Subirrigation(seepage) systems are based on establishment and maintenance of the high water table just beneath the crop root zone. Due to the capillary action the water migrates upward providing necessary moisture for the crop. For this system to function, the top layer of soil must have high hydraulic conductivity typical for sand or muck. The existence of natural high water table or restrictive layer(clay, rock, etc.) below the root zone is necessary to allow for the buildup and regulation of the irrigation water table throughout the season. Raising the water table in addition to providing for the evapotranspirational demand of the crop, requires large quantities of water which must also be available for seepage irrigation. 6, record 52, English, - subsurface%20irrigation

Trickle irrigation laterals can be divided into two categories : line source emitters and point source emitters. Line source emitters are used when plants are closely spaced within a row, with rows several feet apart as with most vegetable crops.... Point source emitters are used when widely spaced point sources of water are needed, as in the case of large containers or orchard crops where the trees are spaced several feet apart in each direction. This type of system utilizes one(or more) emitting device attached to a pipeline at or near the base of the plant, irrigating a single container or a bulb of soil surrounding the root mass of one plant. 3, record 53, English, - in%2Dline%20emitter

Drip Irrigation.... Water is delivered in small quantities under low pressure directly to... the root zone of the plants. You’ll need 1/2 inch polyethylene header pipe, and a roll of thin tape-like porous tubing. The header pipe connects to a garden hose and routes water through the garden. The pipe is placed either down the center or along one end of the garden. Small puncture holes are then made with a screwdriver into the header pipe at intervals corresponding to garden row. Eight-to ten-inch pieces of rubber connecting hose are then inserted into these holes. The other end of the connecting hose attaches to a length of porous tape. This tape is rolled out along each vegetable bed and cut to the same length as the row. Then end of the tape is then crimped to prevent water loss when the system is in use. Porous irrigation tape is best placed about three to four inches away from the base of the plants. 1, record 54, English, - porous%20irrigation%20tape

Mycorrhizal mushrooms have a symbiotic relationship with plants, usually either trees or shrubs. The underground, vegetative part of the fungus-the mycelium-extracts nutrients from the substrate. The mycelium of a mycorrhizal mushroom sheaths the root ends of the flowering plant, expanding the plant's root system : the mushroom receives necessary carbohydrates from the tree. 1, record 65, English, - mycorrhizal%20mushroom

For occasions when a student wants to understand the structure of a control component in details, STEAMER has a facility called the feedback minilab(Forbus, 1984a), where simulated devices can be assembled and tested. On the minilab's screen, the student has a menu of icons representing abstract functions typical of control devices, such as measuring subcomponents or comparators. She can select these abstract components and assemble them on the screen to construct her own control devices. The minilab is then able to generate code from subcomponent specifications to produce a simulation program for the device. Hence, once a controller has been constructed graphically in this way, it can be integrated into a simulation so that its effects on the embedding system can be observed. As implemented, the minilab has limited tutorial capabilities : it can critique the student's device by locating common bugs and recognizing some instances of known devices. Its pedagogical significance lies in its definition of abstract components in terms that allows simulated devices to be built. It is very important for students to acquire this vocabulary of functional abstractions, and the minilab helps root the abstractions’ meaning in direct experiments. 1, record 68, English, - feedback%20minilab
