Nutrient uptake by crops depends on nutrient supply in the soil, root surface area, and root activity. Roots are able to absorb only the nutrients that come into contact with living and active cells, so P uptake is dependent on the condition of a plant's root system. Nutrients contact the root surface by three mechanisms : diffusion, mass/bulk flow, and root interception. 2, record 3, English, - root%20surface

The driving force for root uptake is the water potential difference between soil and plant. Water is transported from high potential to low. There are two principally different resistances to water transfer from the soil to the exchangeable pool in the plant. In the soil, the resistance depends on soil characteristics and soil water potential, while in the plant, biological factors regulate the resistance. The first resistance is called the soil-root resistance(rr) and the second is called the plant resistance(rp) and they are coupled in series, i. e. a water molecule has to path both resistances. 3, record 5, English, - resistance%20to%20water%20transfer
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Access to water can be more difficult because the soil close to the roots tend to dry more quickly. The resistance to water transfer towards the roots gets stronger. But water uptake is essentially limited by the heterogeneous distribution of the roots in the soil. 4, record 5, English, - resistance%20to%20water%20transfer

A primary role of the root system is the absorption of water.... Water Uptake. With the advent of rainfall, water is absorbed from the soil through the epidermis and passes to the xylem via the cortex and endodermis. 2, record 6, English, - water%20absorption
