ROOTING MEDIUM [15 records]

Record 1 2024-09-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Agriculture - General
CONT

The medium used for rooting cuttings must be clean and sterile. Diseases are a frequent cause of poor rooting and may be contracted from containers, tools, workbenches or rooting media that have not been sterilized. The rooting medium should not contain fertilizer. Begin fertilizing after cuttings are rooted and have been transplanted to a growing medium.

OBS

DEF

Entry of substances into roots from the rooting medium, driven by free energy potential difference between root and rooting medium.

CONT

The uptake of nutrient ions into roots occurs by both passive and active processes. The passive processes include mass flow in transpired water, diffusion and the adsorption of ions by components of root cells ... Active processes are involved when the needs for nutrient ions are not met by passive uptake.

DEF

The act of anchoring or condition of having established cohesive root contact with rooting medium.

CONT

The first structure to emerge from the germinating seed is the root, enabling the developing seedling to become anchored in the soil and to absorb water. This reflects the two primary functions of roots, namely anchorage and absorption.

DEF

The soil immediately surrounding the root system of a plant.

CONT

The soil-plant system is one of the most important components in agricultural and natural ecosystems. Nutrient dynamics in soil-plant systems not only reflect the pattern of nutrient flow but also influence food production and quality, and the contaminant pathways in agricultural and natural ecosystems. In soil-plant systems, interaction between nutrients occur when the supply of one nutrient affects the movement, absorption, or utilization of an nutrient within the soil, soil-root interface (rhizosphere), or plant. There are several mechanisms of nutrient interaction in soil-plany systems.

OBS

The zone of rooting medium in which the environment for microbial activity in general is influenced by any root growing in it, distinguishing it from the "bulk" or "non-rhizosphere" soil, which is influenced by growing roots only by the withdrawal of water and nutrients.

DEF

The propagation of plants in a controlled, artificial environment, using plastic or glass culture vessels, aseptic techniques, and a defined growing medium.

CONT

The procedures used for in vitro propagation comprise :(1) the selection of suitable explants, their sterilisation and transfer to nutrient medium,(2) the proliferation of shoots on multiplication medium and(3) the transfer of shoots to a rooting(or storage) medium and planting out.

CONT

The invention provides a process for a least semi-automated plant tissue culture propagation comprising: providing plant tissue culture containing a large number of densely packed meristematic areas, automatically separating and thinning the tissue into small clusters of meristematic tissues, bulk transporting the separated tissue aseptically to a separating apparatus wherein the tissue is washed and propagules of substantially uniform size and substantially free of phytotoxic cell debris are obtained, aseptically transporting the propagules to a culture vessel and distributing the propagules on the surface of a culture medium.

CONT

"Growing medium" is by no means as standard a term as "container". Other terms used synonymously are "rooting mix", "pot mix", "growth medium", "soil mix", and "potting mix". It is the material that fills the containers and performs the same function for the seedling as soil does in the field.

OBS

The term "mix" is used in a number of the terms synonymously with medium, because it describes the medium to be a mixture of substances. This is usually, but not always, the case.

CONT

Natural soil is not used as a rooting medium because other media have more desirable physical characteristics, i. e., water-holding capacity, aeration and bulk density. A mixture of peat moss and vermiculite is most widely used in the Pacific Northwest(PNW), but ground bark is the favorite with some growers....

CONT

In some instances, ground bark has been used instead of sphagnum peat. ... When finely ground bark is used as a substitute for peat moss, supplemental nitrogen is usually needed to prevent the tree seedlings from becoming chlorotic because the bark begins to break down and uses the nitrogen.

D'ailleurs, le poids de ce produit est supérieur à celui de la tourbe, alors que sa capacité d'échange et son rapport C/N sont inférieurs, ce qui limite beaucoup l'utilisation de l'écorce.
