Soil corridors. If there is not room above ground to implement a green corridor, UBC [University of British Columbia] could experiment with underground corridors that connect existing soft landscapes belowground. Assuming space is available below ground, then soil corridors could help conserve soil on campus and also may create more room for tree roots and mycorrhizal fungi to grow.... By proposing soil corridors as a method to increase ecological connectivity on campus, soils are more likely to be conserved if their importance for ecological connectivity and mycorrhizae is recognized and valued. 2, record 1, English, - soil%20corridor

When a tree seed germinates, the first(primary) root grows down in the soil in response to gravity. Secondary roots then branch off horizontally, with subsequent branching into tertiary roots, etc. Absorption of water and mineral nutrients is the function of the very fine, non-woody roots(the feeder roots). With continued growth, each root will lose its ability for absorption. These larger woody roots then function as the transport system for water and nutrients from the new feeder roots to the stem. They are also the tree's system of anchorage and a food storage area. The resulting system thus consists of several main transport roots that extend radically and horizontally from the tree base and divide into ever smaller roots, each ending in a dense mass of fine feeder roots. 2, record 2, English, - feeder%20roots

The potato flea beetle is primarily a pest of potato but it also attacks cucumber, eggplant, pepper, tomato and such other plants as jimsonweed, tobacco, large white petunia, groundcherry and bittersweet... Feeding injury, whether by adults on potato leaves in spring or late summer, or by larvae on tubers and roots and transmission of plant pathogens, are all potential ways in which this flea beetle may reduce potato yields both in terms of quality and quantity. Adult feeding on leaves results in rounded feeding scars, 0. 1 to 5 mm in diameter, which usually penetrate through the leaf to form a hole. 3, record 5, English, - potato%20flea%20beetle

3, record 14, French, - l%C3%A9gume%2Dracine

With systemic racism, recurring discriminatory behaviours are the result of an underlying structure, a system with roots that are long-standing and well integrated in society. The acceptance and trivialization of these discriminatory practices within organizations often make systemic racism difficult to detect and dismantle. Systemic racism also seeps into culture, particularly through stereotypes that lead to discrimination. It can therefore be perpetuated by individual behaviour, such as word choices, opinions and gestures. 3, record 16, English, - systemic%20racism

Rhizodegradation... is a much slower process than phytodegradation. Microorganisms(yeast, fungi, or bacteria) consume and digest organic substances for nutrition and energy. Certain microorganisms can digest organic substances such as fuels or solvents that are hazardous to humans and break them down into harmless products through biodegradation. Natural substances released by the plant roots-sugars, alcohols, and acids-contain organic carbon that provides food for soil microorganisms, and the additional nutrients enhance their activity. 3, record 35, English, - rhizodegradation

Routine dental care is important due to the unique structure and function of horses’ teeth. Horses have a combination of brachydont and hypsodont teeth. The simple (brachydont) teeth are the first premolars (wolf tooth) and canines that have a distinct crown and root, but have no function for the domestic horse. The incisors and molars (cheek teeth) are hypsodont, like the molars of ruminants (cows, goats and sheep etc). This type of tooth has a large body that continues to erupt into the horse’s mouth as they are worn down by fibrous feed material. Most of the tooth is below the gum line in younger horses and continues to develop as it enters the mouth. 3, record 49, English, - hypsodont

The life cycle of SCN [soybean cyst nematode] has three major stages : egg, juvenile and adult. The cycle begins when eggs hatch to release worm-shaped juveniles in the soil. This is the only stage when SCN can infect soybean roots. Soybean plants release chemicals that attract the larvae to the roots. Once they have penetrated the roots, the young nematodes migrate to the water and nutrient-conducting tissue(vascular system) and establish a feeding site(syncytia). 3, record 76, English, - soybean%20cyst%20nematode

The United Way-Centraide Movement had its roots in Canada in early part of the 20th century. At that time, Catholic, Protestant and Jewish charities began to raise funds to strengthen their communities. Over the years, the United Way-Centraide was known as the Red Feather, the Community Chest, and the United Appeal. In the 1970s, these organizations adopted the name of United Way and Centraide. United Way of Canada-Centraide Canada(UWC-CC) is a national organization created in 1939 and supported by 126 member United Ways and Centraides(UWs-Cs) in Canada. It acts as a voice for the members within the Canadian voluntary sector and international level.
