CONT

Soil corridors. If there is not room above ground to implement a green corridor, UBC [University of British Columbia] could experiment with underground corridors that connect existing soft landscapes belowground. Assuming space is available below ground, then soil corridors could help conserve soil on campus and also may create more room for tree roots and mycorrhizal fungi to grow.... By proposing soil corridors as a method to increase ecological connectivity on campus, soils are more likely to be conserved if their importance for ecological connectivity and mycorrhizae is recognized and valued.

CONT

When a tree seed germinates, the first(primary) root grows down in the soil in response to gravity. Secondary roots then branch off horizontally, with subsequent branching into tertiary roots, etc. Absorption of water and mineral nutrients is the function of the very fine, non-woody roots(the feeder roots). With continued growth, each root will lose its ability for absorption. These larger woody roots then function as the transport system for water and nutrients from the new feeder roots to the stem. They are also the tree's system of anchorage and a food storage area. The resulting system thus consists of several main transport roots that extend radically and horizontally from the tree base and divide into ever smaller roots, each ending in a dense mass of fine feeder roots.

A small oval shining black flea beetle (Epitrix cucumeris) that injures the leaves of various plants.

CONT

The potato flea beetle is primarily a pest of potato but it also attacks cucumber, eggplant, pepper, tomato and such other plants as jimsonweed, tobacco, large white petunia, groundcherry and bittersweet... Feeding injury, whether by adults on potato leaves in spring or late summer, or by larvae on tubers and roots and transmission of plant pathogens, are all potential ways in which this flea beetle may reduce potato yields both in terms of quality and quantity. Adult feeding on leaves results in rounded feeding scars, 0. 1 to 5 mm in diameter, which usually penetrate through the leaf to form a hole.

CONT

DEF

The discriminatory treatment of certain groups of people based on their race or ethnicity, caused and maintained by the apparently neutral practices, policies, procedures and cultures of organizations and government structures.

OBS

With systemic racism, recurring discriminatory behaviours are the result of an underlying structure, a system with roots that are long-standing and well integrated in society. The acceptance and trivialization of these discriminatory practices within organizations often make systemic racism difficult to detect and dismantle. Systemic racism also seeps into culture, particularly through stereotypes that lead to discrimination. It can therefore be perpetuated by individual behaviour, such as word choices, opinions and gestures.

OBS

This system of inequality grants privileges to people from the dominant group and undermines the rights of those from racialized groups.

DEF

A black box is a bare room with a movable seating area, a movable stage, and a flexible lighting system ... As per the name ... black boxes are often painted black and are square or rectangular in shape, with the idea that this is the most neutral setting in which to give productions a wide array of design and staging choices.

CONT

Black box theaters have their roots in the European avant-garde of the early 20th century. The black box theaters became popular and increasingly widespread in the 1960s as rehearsal spaces. Almost any large room can be transformed into a "black box" with the aid of paint or curtains, making black box theaters an easily accessible option for theater artists... The black box is also considered by many to be a place where more "pure" theatre can be explored, with the most human and least technical elements in focus.

For some there is not much leeway between necessary and toxic amounts; other plants require or tolerate large amounts. Deficiency symptoms vary with the crop... Beets, turnips, other root crops. Black Heart, Brown Heart. Roots have dark spots; plants are gradually stunted and dwarfed; leaves are small, variegated, twisted. The interior of the beet or turnip has a dark brown to nearly black water-soaked area, sometimes with a hollow center. The amount of borax that can be added without injury depends on type of soil and moisture content.

CONT

The United Way-Centraide Movement had its roots in Canada in early part of the 20th century. At that time, Catholic, Protestant and Jewish charities began to raise funds to strengthen their communities. Over the years, the United Way-Centraide was known as the Red Feather, the Community Chest, and the United Appeal. In the 1970s, these organizations adopted the name of United Way and Centraide. United Way of Canada-Centraide Canada(UWC-CC) is a national organization created in 1939 and supported by 126 member United Ways and Centraides(UWs-Cs) in Canada. It acts as a voice for the members within the Canadian voluntary sector and international level. Each UW-C is an autonomous organization operated by a voluntary Board of Directors chosen from the community it serves.
