ROPE COIL [10 records]

Record 1 2017-12-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mountain Sports
DEF

Rope coil formed by holding one end of the rope and coiling it into loops, then securing the ends to ensure that the coil maintains its circular shape.

CONT

For carrying or storing, the rope is normally coiled, most commonly in the mountain coil(fig. 6-3) or the butterfly coil(fig. 6-4).... The mountaineer's coil is advantaged when the rope is carried over a pack.

OBS

The mountaineer’s coil or shoulder coil can be carried easily over the shoulder and across chest or over a pack.

OBS

DEF

A knot used primarily in lifting heavy equipment with the catline, since it can be readily tied and untied regardless of the weight of the load on it.

CONT

Sailors use this knot to tie their sails up. Once firmly snugged, it will not release to pressure until undone. Many large freighters and other big boats are moored with simple knots like this. The bowline has the added feature that it can be easily be undone when wet.

CONT

Use the bowline on a coil to tie yourself into the end of the rope. If you are an alpine climber who mistakenly ventures into an exposed spot without having first put on your harness, you can quickly safeguard yourself by tying the rope with this knot.

DEF

To prepare a rope so that it won’t tangle when you are using it.

CONT

Flaking out of your rope. Before you can use your rope, you must uncoil it.... Climbers refer to this important uncoiling of their ropes as "flaking the rope out". To flake your rope out, hold it(coiled) in one hand and, with the other hand, remove every coil, one by one. Toss each coil on the ground... one on top of the other. You should form a loose pile of rope... This way the rope will easily follow you up the rock, without tangling on itself.
