baobab : [...] Ce sont de très gros arbres [des régions tropicales de l'Afrique et de l'Asie] dont la hauteur ne dépasse pas 20 m, mais qui peuvent avoir un tronc de plus de 25 m de circonférence à la base; les grosses branches s'étalent largement. Le bois est tendre et léger. [...] Les fruits, grosses capsules ligneuses, connus sous le nom de pain de singe, sont ovoïdes, de la grosseur d'une orange, et renferment une pulpe comestible et acidulée, dans laquelle sont disséminées les graines.

Origine du mot «baobab». La première description [...] aurait été faite par le portugais Gomes Eanes de Zurara [...] vers 1450 : «... son fruit est comme une calebasse ...». À la suite de cette observation, il porta donc le nom de calebassier du XVème au XVIIIème siècle.
