ROPE TEAM [5 records]

Record 1 2017-12-01

English

Subject field(s)
  • Ropemaking
CONT

... the figure-Eight follow through [is] actually the exact same knot as the figure-eight on a loop, except for how you tie it. Instead of tying it with a loop, you first tie a figure eight into the rope and then run the end through your harness and then you "follow-through" to complete the knot.

CONT

Figure-eight followo-through. This variation of the figure eight loop is widely used for climbing for tying on to the rope and for anchoring non-climbing member to a team. A stopper knot should be added.

CONT

Figure eight follow through. There are two versions of this knot; each has a different function. One allows you to join two lines; the other permits you to create a loop of any size in the end of the rope. It’s a bit slower to tie than a bowline, but just as effective.

CONT

DEF

... the stationary climber [who] manages the rope that is tied to the climbing member of the team and uses it to stop a fall if one should occur.

CONT

Your job as a belayer is to pay out or take in rope as the climber moves, so as to catch the climber with as little slack as possible in case of a fall.

OBS

The anchor is used to tie the belayer - and through him, the climber - to the cliff or mountain. The anchor must be absolutely solid.

CONT

When individual performances are inhibited by the presence of others, the Ringelmann effect is said to have transpired. The implications in sport are evident: individuals’ performances should decrease as the size of the team in which they are competing increases.

CONT

Ringelmann noticed that, as you added more and more people to a group pulling on a rope, the total force exerted by the group rose, but the average force exerted by each group member declined. The Ringelmann effect thus describes the inverse relationship between the size of a team and the magnitude of group member's individual contribution to the accomplishment of the task.

DEF
