When the "haul in" signal is given on the docking telegraph …, the operator pulls on the slack end of the rope that is wound loosely round the drum of the winch. This tightens the rope slightly on the drum and it grips the surface. The amount of tension on the free end of the rope is multiplied several hundred times and the resulting force is enough to move the entire ship, pulling it into the correct position. The [captain] signals with the docking telegraph or a hand held radio to tell the winch operator what to do and, by heaving in and paying out the ropes at each end of the ship, she can be positioned in exactly the right place regardless of the wind and waves. 1, record 2, English, - docking%20telegraph

Cranes. A hand-operated jib crane is the simplest type of crane. It has a long jib, or arm, that extends several feet from a heavy base [or the columns or walls of a building]. The base keeps the crane from tipping over. The end of the jib has a pulley. A rope or cable with a lifting hook in the end runs from this pulley to a winch(crank) in the foundation. Slow-speed plows equipped with stepped knives generally cut only in one direction, the cutting run being made at speeds of 15-20 ft/min and the return being made at 30-60 ft/min. In order to maintain productivity with the slow-speed plows it is necessary to take as deep a slice as possible during the cutting run and the depth of slice may vary from 6 to 12 in., according to the hardness of the seam. The machine is hauled along the face by a 7/8 in. diameter wire rope which is wound by a 40-h. p. electrically driven winch located in the tail gate. Slow plows have been successfully used in conjunction with pre-cutting of the face but it appears that they will be superseded by rapid plows because of the greater productive capacity of the latter machines. 1, record 19, English, - slow%2Dspeed%20plow

Rabot statique d'origine. 1, record 19, French, - rabot%20statique
