A hybrid rose developed by Dutch rose breeders in the period between the 1600s and the 1800s, possibly earlier. It is a complex hybrid bred from Rosa gallica, Rosa moschata, Rosa canina, and Rosa damascena.

Constit. 70-75% free geraniol and citronellol; small amounts of their esters; terpenes. Colorless or pale yellow liquid; viscous et 25°; highly fragrant, rose odor... Very slightly sol in water, sparingly sol in alcohol; sol in fatty oils, chloroform... Use : Largely in perfumery; for flavoring lozenges, ointments, and toilet prepns.

In 1891 Eckart concluded that the oil from Rosa damascena(Bulgarian Otto of Rose) contained an alcohol to which he gave the name rhodinol but subsequent investigation has shown that this alcohol was in fact a mixture of citronellol and geraniol.

OBS

Used in perfumes, especially those of the rose type. ... It has the strong odour if rose and consists essentially of geraniol and citronellol.
