This type of lace is made with a needle. It is considered to be the most delicate and precious of all laces. The pattern is first designed on paper, often reinforced with a piece of tissue, on which the design is realized. The design usually represents a rose or some other flower. To start, the lacemaker elaborates the flower's outline with a thicker thread, so to add relief to the work. The next stage is to fill in the interior of the flower design with much finer thread and a variety of different stitches. A fine handkerchief medallion takes three days’ work. To produce larger pieces, all the medallions are sewn together with a thread so fine that it can only be detected by the eye of an expert. 2, record 24, English, - rose%20point%20lace

2, record 30, French, - henn%C3%A9

The Avalon Wilderness Reserve is 1, 070 km² of barrens and forests. It protects the Avalon woodland caribou herd, the most southerly caribou herd in Canada. The survival of this herd is a North American conservation success story. The herd had dwindled to only a few dozen animals by the early 1960s, but it rose to a high of six to seven thousand animals in the early 1990s. In 1998, it numbered almost two thousand animals 1, record 66, English, - Avalon%20Wilderness%20Reserve

... methane gas bubbling through seafloor sediments has created hundreds of low hills on the floor of the Arctic Ocean. These enigmatic features, which can grow up to 40 meters(130 feet) tall and several hundred meters across, have puzzled scientists ever since they were first discovered in the 1940s.... "Pingo-like features" are similar in shape and size to pingos on land, but are found underwater, on the continental shelf in several parts of the Arctic. Previous studies have suggested that pingo-like features are pingos that formed on land but were submerged when sea level rose following the end of the last ice age, over 10, 000 years ago. 1, record 67, English, - pingo%2Dlike%20feature

The Treaty of Washington was a treaty concluded in 1871 between Britain and the United States for setting various differences between the two governments, but chiefly those with regard to the Alabama claims. In the beginning of 1871 the British government sent Sir John Rose to the United States to ascertain whether negociations looking towards the settlement of the question in dispute would be acceptable to the President. The United States government received his advances with cordiality and on the 26th of January Sir Edward Thornton, the British Minister at Washington, formally proposed the appointment of a joint high commission to meet at Washington for the purpose of devising means for setting the matters at issue. The United States readily consented to the proposal, provided the differences growing out of the Civil War should be included among the subjects to be considered. The British government promptly accepted the American proviso and the President appointed commissioners. 1, record 83, English, - Treaty%20of%20Washington

5, record 84, French, - fontange

The Royal Victorian Chain is an award, instituted in 1902 by King Edward VII as a personal award of the Monarch(i. e. not an award by the British or any other Commonwealth Realm government). Although it is similar in appearance to the Royal Victorian Order, the two awards are unrelated. The Royal Victorian Chain does not confer upon its recipients any style or title-in fact, the Chain is not even given a precedence within any Commonwealth honours system-but it represents a personal token of high distinction and esteem from the Monarch. The Chain can be conferred upon men and women, both of the Realms and foreign. The chain is in gold, decorated with motifs of Tudor rose, Thistle, Shamrock and Lotus Flower(symbolizing England, Scotland, Ireland and India respectively), and a crowned, red enamelled cipher of King Edward VII "ERI"(Edwardus Rex Imperator), surrounded by a gold wreath for men, upon which the badge is suspended. The chain is worn around the collar by men, or with the four motifs and some chain links fixed to a riband in the form of bow(blue with red-white-red edges) on the left shoulder by women. However the Queen's sister Princess Margaret in later life wore her chain around the collar, as male recipients do. 1, record 94, English, - Royal%20Victorian%20Chain
