Remotely acquired data using the Landsat satellite system provide a means for initiating crop growth simulation models and crop phenology models at a field level over a large geographic area. A model based on Landsat spectral data has been developed that estimates a spectral emergence of the crop at a pixel(field) level. This spectral emergence date is evaluated using dates of planting and emergence reported by farmers for their fields or spring wheat(Triticum aestivum L.) and barley(Hordeum vulare L.) located in North and South Dakota. The model can provide a means of understanding the distribution of crop emergence across all pixels of a region. This knowledge of emergence date of spring grains from satellite data provides an ability to run crop development and yield prediction models at field level.

Analytical ferrography is among the most powerful diagnostic tools in oil analysis. The test is qualitative, because it relies on the skill and knowledge of the ferrographic analyst.... A sample of the machine's lubricating oil is taken and diluted, then run across a glass slide. This glass slide is then placed on a magnetic cylinder that attracts the contaminants. Non-magnetic contaminants remain distributed across the slide from the wash. These contaminants are then washed, to remove excess oil, heated to 315 °C(600 °F) for 2 minutes and the slide is analysed under a microscope. After analysis, the particles will be ranked according to size. Particles larger than 30 μm in size are considered "abnormal" and indicate severe wear.

As the name implies, the carabiner brake rappel is a rappel technique which uses a series of carabiners to produce the friction necessary for braking during a descent. One advantage of using this method is that there is no friction between the rope and the climber's body. The system requires two carabiners, arranged with their gates opposed, to form the platform, or base of the brake. The platform is attached to the harness or diaper sling using a carabiner(s). The braking carabiner(s), positioned across the platform carabiners and beneath the rope loop produce the necessary friction through their contact with the bight of the rope. The amount of friction produced depends on the number of braking carabiners used but, it is very important that the rope never run on the gate of the braking carabiner(s).
