The National Imagery and Mapping Agency(NIMA) provides timely, relevant, and accurate imagery, imagery intelligence, and geospatial information in support of military, national-level, and civil users. NIMA was established on October 1, 1996 as a Department of Defense(DoD) combat support agency. NIMA was formed through the consolidation, in their entirety, of the Defense Mapping Agency(DMA), the Central Imagery Office(CIO), the Defense Dissemination Program Office(DDPO), and the National Photographic Interpretation Center(NPIC).

CONT

DFAD is a standard NIMA [National Imagery and Mapping Agency] product that supports radar return simulation, navigation and terrain obstruction studies. When combined with DTED [Digital Terrain Elevation Data], DFAD provides an off-line data base for use by weapon system flight simulators and other types of simulation, such as line of sight, obstruction and perspective view development. It portrays major natural and man-made features on the Earth's surface; the features and associated attributes of which are generally of radar reflectance significance. Content is derived from both cartographic and photo-grammetric source material.

The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission(SRTM) will collect these important data during an 11-day space shuttle mission in 1999. The mission is a partnership between NASA and the Department of Defense's National Imagery and Mapping Agency(NIMA). In addition, the German and Italian space agencies are contributing an experimental high-resolution imaging radar system. Analysts will use the SRTM data to generate 3-D topographic maps called digital elevation models.
