Pit sawing operations have a long and vibrant history. Well before circular saws were used to saw logs lengthwise, they were processed by placing them over a "pit"-hence the reference to "pit saw. "The saw operates vertically up and down. Operated by two men, a man on top, known as the "Top Dog", guided the saw as it was pulled down in a cutting motion by the "Underdog. "The "Top dog" recovered the saw and the "Underdog" then pulled it down in a cutting motion again. Needless to say the "Underdog" copped a fair bit of sawdust. The top of the saw has a fixed "tiller handle" so the topdog can guide it and cut a straight line. The lower part of the saw has a "block" which is easily detachable with a wedge. The block can be taken off to allow the saw to be threaded through the saw cut. 1, record 2, English, - tiller%20handle

How to rescue an avalanche victim... If someone is buried in an avalanche, time is of the essence. You must attempt to rescue the victim immediately, because by the time rescuers arrive, it is usually too late. Watch the victim. As soon as someone gets caught in an avalanche, try to track their path. Don’t take your eyes off them. 2, record 7, French, - victime%20d%27avalanche

The Oshawa Railway Company was born in 1895, and effectively died on May 2, 1964 when the line was 100% dieselized by the CNR, however, power was not shut off until July 2, 1964. The OR was built, as most railways were, to provide both freight and passenger service. In the case of the OR, its operation was confined to the City of Oshawa even though they operated a number of passenger cars that would have been more suited to interurban operation. The main passenger line ran in a north-south direction on Simcoe Street, from Ross’ Corners down to Lakeview Park on the shores of Lake Ontario. When passenger service ended in 1940, several cars were re-distributed among other Canadian National Electric Railway lines where they saw many more years of use. 1, record 9, English, - Oshawa%20Railway%20Company

The knee-bolter was a steel topped table on a track, with a wide slot in the front to admit the knee-bolter saw. The top of the table was level with the deck so the operator stood in a hole... The saw was vertical and was sixty inches in diameter, ran at 600 RPM and had sixty large, mean-looking, inserted teeth. The table had an arm that stuck out to fit between the operator's legs, hence the name "knee bolter. "The operator would wrestle the block onto the table, and, with his legs, push table and block into the saw, rotating the block so as to peel off the bark. If there was a large knot in the block, he would saw directly through it, so the knot would be the part of the block that would necessarily be wasted in the final cutting of the shingles. 1, record 11, English, - knee%2Dbolter
