The compass saw is a particularly useful tool for the carpenter. It performs many tasks, from cutting curves and circles to starting a cut from a hole bored in wood. It is manufactured in various sizes, and basically it is tapered from the tooth edge to a thin back to allow for clearance. As to its appearance, it has a sharp point and the teeth extend the full length of the blade. 1, record 2, English, - compass%20saw

[A saw] used for cutting across or against the grain of the wood. The teeth of a good crosscut saw are filed at a 65° angle and are set evenly; the space between each tooth is about half the thickness of the blade. The upper halves of the teeth are set alternately to the right and left to ensure proper clearance. 1, record 16, English, - crosscut%20saw

2, record 16, French, - scie%20%C3%A0%20tron%C3%A7onner

In friction cutting, an intense heat is generated which softens the material. The blade teeth do not actually cut but, rather, scoop out the soft material.... A momentary contact of the fast-moving saw tooth against the material being cut produces enough friction to heat the material to its softening point. This heating is largely confined to a very small area of contact immediately ahead of the saw blade.... As the material is fed into the saw, this narrow line of softened material is removed by the rapid motion of the blade. 2, record 18, English, - friction%20sawing

Pit saw teeth are raked one way to cut only on the down stroke, and are spaced at 5/8-1 in. They are called gullet or briar teeth owing to the hollow cut away in front of each tooth; this, it is said, allows more room for the sawdust. 2, record 20, English, - gullet%20teeth
