SEA BACKSCATTER [4 records]

Record 1 2003-03-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Radar, Radio Guidance and Goniometry
  • Range Measurements (Telecommunications)
CONT

In wave mode, the ASAR [advanced synthetic aperture radar] instrument, measures changes in backscatter from the sea surface due to ocean wave action. Therefore it generates vignettes... The position of the wave vignette across track being selected as either constant or alternating between two across-track positions over the full swath range.

CONT

Due to the reduced size of the imagettes compared to normal ASAR [advanced synthetic aperture radar] images, each Wave Mode Geolocation Annotation Data Set Record (ADSR) contains only the geodetic latitude and longitude of the centre point of the imagette. One ADSR is produced for each wave cell.

CONT

In wave mode, the ASAR [advanced synthetic aperture radar] instrument measures changes in backscatter from the sea surface due to ocean wave action.

CONT

Record 3 2002-11-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Remote Sensing
  • Electromagnetic Radiation
CONT

X-band(9. 5-10. 0 GHz) backscatter at near grazing incidence(0. 2 deg) from the sea off the coast of Kauai, Hawaii, was measured with a radar characterized by a high spatial resolution in range(0. 3 m) and a high temporal resolution(2000 Hz pulse repetition frequency(PRF].... Each type of clutter exhibited the characteristic spiky behavior which has come to be expected from microwave sea backscatter observed at low grazing angles and high range resolutions, while showing, between themselves, marked transmit geometry and polarization dependent contrasts, with the horizontally polarized clutter, measured with an UP transmit geometry, being especially notable for its frequently occurring, significant high frequency spectral content.

The functional dual of the dominant scatter algorithm : it self-synchronizes a distorted array an radar backscatter from statistically homogenous scatterers as is typified by sea clutter.
