CONT

HALIFAX class frigates carry a formidable array of weapons and sensor systems including 8 Harpoon long-range, surface-to-surface missiles, 16 Sea Sparrow surface-to-air missiles, a Bofors 57mm rapid-fire gun, a 20mm Phalanx anti-missile close-in-weapons-system (CIWS), 8 x 12.7mm machine guns and 24 anti-submarine homing torpedoes. In addition, the ships can defend themselves using infra-red suppression, Shield decoys, chaff, flares, a towed acoustic decoy, and radar and sonar jamming devices. The ship’s torpedo-carrying helicopter significantly extends its range of operational effectiveness.

CONT

[Halifax-class ships] make extensive use of Canadian-designed computer technology for integrated propulsion and machinery control, communications and combat systems. Each ship is equipped to operate with one Sea King helicopter. Capable of speeds in excess of 30 nautical miles(55 km) per hour, Halifax-class frigates have a normal operating range of up to 11, 000 kilometres. Each ship has a crew of 225(or 195 without helicopter detachment embarked).

CONT

The Sea Training job... entailed sailing on all ships at one time or another and putting them "through their paces" to ensure they were combat ready and safe to go to sea as a ship of war.... We also conducted SRI(Sea Readiness Inspections) onboard small reserve vessels in Halifax and inland to Ottawa, Kingston, Montreal and Windsor. [We] would also go to the west coast to conduct AWUPS(annual workups-two weeks duration) of a ship while the west coast equivalent would be conducting WUPS(full workups-4 weeks duration) on another ship.

OBS

The annual workup will also occur shortly after a submarine docking period. It will consist of ten days of watchkeeping/command team training, followed by one week of at-sea safety operational training.
