In an osmotic power plant, we feed freshwater and seawater into two chambers, separated by a membrane. The salt in the seawater then draws the freshwater through the membrane, causing the pressure on the seawater side to increase. This pressure corresponds to a water column of 120 metres, similar to a large waterfall, and can be utilized in a turbine to generate electricity. Osmotic power plants can be constructed anywhere freshwater flows out into the sea, provided that the salt concentration is sufficiently high. 3, record 3, English, - osmotic%20power%20plant

The internal modes of the North Pacific can lead to climatic oscillations through ocean-atmosphere interactions and induce global climate responses. The best example is the Pacific decadal oscillation, but this fails to explain many climate phenomena. Here, another multidecadal variability over the North Pacific is described, found by analyzing reconstructed data covering the past 140 years. It is named the Pacific multidecadal oscillation(PMO), with anomalously high/low [sea surface temperatures] over the northeastern Pacific, and a quasi-60-year cycle. 1, record 17, English, - Pacific%20multidecadal%20oscillation

Cold brachythecium moss(Brachythecium frigidum)... is a shiny moss that can be green, brownish, rich golden or golden brown in colour, that exists in moderately dense mats. This species is very common in western North America and can be confused with other species despite having distinctive characters. The leaves have a somewhat auriculate base formed by the convex group of enlarged pellucid alar cells, a conspicuous row of large cells across the insertion, strong plication and evenly serrulate to serrate margins. Cold brachythecium moss can be found in soil in wet places, moderate shade to open sun, on rock and fallen trunks. It is found in Alberta and British Columbia in low to high elevations ranging from 0 to 3, 300 [metres above sea level]... 1, record 24, English, - cold%20brachythecium%20moss

Typical for much of the processing industry is that it is raw-material based and energy-and capital-intensive with plants often located outside metropolitan areas. It is also dependent on effective infrastructure and good transportation systems, by both land and sea. Although the processing industry manufactures products to a large extent for other manufacturing companies, an increasing amount of products are going directly to end users. A considerable portion of products are exported. In an international perspective, the products have a high knowledge and value-added content, and production processes are often automated. 4, record 30, English, - processing%20industry

A cabbage-size onion of the family Liliaceae that may weigh up to 13 pounds with a stalk that can grow to nearly 5 feet high... It grows wild in sandy coastal areas fringing the Mediterranean, in South Africa and on the coast of the Canary Islands... Although sea onions are grown in cultivation, most of the world's supply of derivative chemical comes from the wild plants. The chemical may differ, depending on the color of the bulb's outer layers. Although one name for the species as a whole is red squill, two varieties exist : white and red. Both kinds contain the medical drugs for which the bulbs are sought, but the red variety, which is largely collected in Algeria and Cyprus, also contains a highly poisonous substance, scillirocide. Therefore, only white squill is commonly used as a medicinal source. 1, record 31, English, - red%20squill

To many geomorphologists, the term "foreshore" is considered synonymous with the intertidal zone. These definitions are compared with the legal definitions of the "foreshore" as exist in Britain under the three different property law regimes; English, Scottish and Udal law. The legal definitions and many of the geomorphological definitions are based on tidal data. The differences between the observed tides at a tide gauge and on a beach at a distance from the gauge are considered. It is concluded that the term "foreshore" has a very specific legal meaning in each property law regime, therefore the authors propose that the term "foreshore" should be used to relate to the legally defined area of the coast and, unless specifically referring to the foreshore, scientists should use the term "intertidal." 15, record 34, English, - intertidal%20zone

[Silver, copper, lead and zinc] form compounds with sulphur, called sulphides. Deep in the Earth’s crust, where it is very hot, salty water (called brine) circulates and dissolves these metals, collecting them up and concentrating them in the hot brine. ... Sometimes, on the sea floor, this brine comes up through the surface out of holes we call vents. When the hot brine comes into contact with the cold sea water the metal sulphides cannot stay dissolved and precipitate onto the sea floor as various minerals. 2, record 43, English, - hot%20brine

Cork Insulation. Cork is the outer bark of an oak tree that flourishes only in the area surrounding the western Mediterranean Sea. Instead of being fibrous in structure, the bark of the cork oak is composed of tiny cells, so small that there are 200 million of them to every cubic inch of cork bark. These tiny cells give cork a high resistance to the passage of heat. Each cell is filled with still air, and next to a vacuum, still air is the best insulation known. Because the cells are so tiny, no convection currents in the air can be established to reduce its insulation properties. The cellular structure gives the material its high degree of natural moisture resistance. Each tiny cork cell is a perfect geometric shape, having 14 sides. The volume of cork includes more than 75% air. Its thermal conductivity is 0. 26 Btu per square foot per hour per degree temperature difference at 60 degrees F.(metric), and 0. 30 Btu per square foot per degree temperature difference at 180 degrees F(metric). 2, record 45, English, - cork%20insulation

Accounting for more than 1/3 of the total variance of the sea level pressure(SLP) field over the North Atlantic, the NAO is most pronounced during the winter months(December through March) due to an increased sea air temperature contrast(Barnston and Livezey, 1987). 4, record 49, English, - North%20Atlantic%20oscillation

1, record 51, French, - convertisseur%20Pelamis

This provides water at lower cost without any detrimental effects on the aquifer. In fact this may reduce initial losses that occur at high water-table conditions such as by evapotranspiration, or subterranean flow to the sea. On landing, the SH-60B is assisted by means of hand-down cable into a trap, the jaws of which close, lock and secure the helicopter on deck. The trap, which is on tracks, then moves into the hangar taking the helicopter with it. Results are presented for laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS) as a method for measuring salt concentrations in sea water aerosol droplets. An excimer laser, operating at high pulse energy with KrF gas produces laser-induced breakdown plasmas in an aerosol spray. Emission lines of Na and H are monitored with an optical multi-channel analyzer to characterize the plasma spatially and temporally. 1, record 97, English, - laser%2Dinduced%20breakdown

1, record 97, French, - claquage%20induit%20par%20%C3%A9clair%20laser
