The oceans are mostly composed of warm salty water near the surface over cold, less salty water in the ocean depths. These two regions don’t mix except in certain special areas. The ocean currents, the movement of the ocean in the surface layer, are driven mostly by the wind. In certain areas near the polar oceans, the colder surface water also gets saltier due to evaporation or sea ice formation. In these regions, the surface water becomes dense enough to sink to the ocean depths. This pumping of surface water into the deep ocean forces the deep water to move horizontally until it can find an area on the world where it can rise back to the surface and close the current loop. This usually occurs in the equatorial ocean, mostly in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. This very large, slow current is called the thermohaline circulation because it is caused by temperature and salinity(haline) variations. 2, record 25, English, - deep%20water

3, record 57, French, - Satellite%20europ%C3%A9en%20de%20t%C3%A9l%C3%A9d%C3%A9tection

The Advanced Wind Scatterometer(Ascat) is a C-band radar instrument used for global measurement of the sea surface wind vectors. Ascat will provide, in addition to the sea surface wind vectors, observations of surface characteristics over land and ice. By virtue to its wide swath, and continuous operation round the orbit, Ascat will provide quasi-global coverage in 24 hours. 3, record 58, English, - advanced%20scatterometer

... methane gas bubbling through seafloor sediments has created hundreds of low hills on the floor of the Arctic Ocean. These enigmatic features, which can grow up to 40 meters(130 feet) tall and several hundred meters across, have puzzled scientists ever since they were first discovered in the 1940s.... "Pingo-like features" are similar in shape and size to pingos on land, but are found underwater, on the continental shelf in several parts of the Arctic. Previous studies have suggested that pingo-like features are pingos that formed on land but were submerged when sea level rose following the end of the last ice age, over 10, 000 years ago. 1, record 71, English, - pingo%2Dlike%20feature

The RADARSAT Antarctic Mapping Mission(AMM) has important significance for the scientific community. Almost 70% of the Earth's fresh water is contained in the Antarctic region, and changes in this enormous reservoir directly influence world sea levels and climate. The new digital radar map will provide an unprecedented detailed portrayal of the surface form and features of the ice sheet. This RADARSAT based map will help scientists to better understand the dynamic behaviour of the ice sheet and provide them with a greater insight into the effects of human activity on the Southern Continent. 2, record 98, English, - Antarctic%20Mapping%20Mission
