OBS

The Greenland Sea Project(GSP) was aimed at observing and modelling the atmospheric, ice, oceanic and biological processes relevant to understanding the role of the Nordic Seas in the climate system. The project was developed and coordinated under the auspices of the Arctic Ocean Sciences Board(AOSB) and was co-sponsored by ICES. It was carried out by national surveys, which resulted in new data sets that cover spatial scales from event via season to several years.

CONT

Newfoundland coastal waters are too cold for the production of salmon raised in large "fish farm" cages near shore. However, researchers at the Logy Bay research laboratory have found a way to take the "antifreeze gene" from flounder and cod and incorporate it into Newfoundland salmon.

CONT

Although McMurdo Sound fishes are exposed to great extremes of ice and temperature, antifreeze peptides enable them to avoid freezing. Dr. Arthur DeVries and his team wil look at the relationship among antifreeze levels in the fish, sea-ice cover and sea temperature; the structure and function of antifreeze molecules; and the structure and organization of the antifreeze gene. Additionally, they will try to determine whether Antarctic fishes have mechanisms to dispose of accumulated ice in their bodies.

OBS

In one of the larger and more Complex operations ever supported in the Arctic by the National Science Foundation(NSF), an ice breaker was frozen into the perennial pack ice and left to drift for a full year. From October, 1997 to October 1998, the ship served as a floating scientific research station, supporting the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean(SHEBA) project. The mission was to acquire data on the great canopy of pack ice, about the size of the United States, that covers the surface of the Arctic Ocean. Researchers at the ice station studied the atmosphere, ocean, sea ice and snow cover, to determine how these media interact through the surface heat budget, and how the interactions affect climate.

GOES [geostationary operational environmental satellites] provide visible and infrared radiometer data that are used for imaging purposes, radiation measurements, and temperature profiles. GOES satellite imagery is used to estimate rainfall amounts, snow accumulation, and overall extent of snow cover. In addition, satellite sensors detect ice fields and map the movement of sea and lake ice.

CONT

The visible and infrared radiometer is a standard radiometer that measures the intensity of radiation in five wavelength channels.

OBS

VIR: Visible and Infrared Radiometer (NOAA and ITOS) [National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Satellite and Improved TIROS Operational System].

DEF

A scanning radiometer that measures microwave radiation in five wavelength bands and 10 channels to determine the wind, sea surface temperature and roughness, cloud water content, precipitation, snow cover and sea ice.

CONT

The scanning multichannel microwave radiometer (SMMR) is an imaging 5-frequency radiometer ... It measures dual-polarized microwave radiances from the earth’s atmosphere and surface, primarily for the purpose of deriving global and nearly all-weather measurements of sea surface temperature, wind speed, and atmospheric liquid water and water vapor.

OBS

This radiometer flew on Seasat (launched in June 1978) and Nimbus-7 (launched in October 1978).
