In an osmotic power plant, we feed freshwater and seawater into two chambers, separated by a membrane. The salt in the seawater then draws the freshwater through the membrane, causing the pressure on the seawater side to increase. This pressure corresponds to a water column of 120 metres, similar to a large waterfall, and can be utilized in a turbine to generate electricity. Osmotic power plants can be constructed anywhere freshwater flows out into the sea, provided that the salt concentration is sufficiently high. 3, record 2, English, - osmotic%20power%20plant

Most energy sources on Earth are forms of indirect solar energy, although we usually don’t think of them in that way. Coal, oil and natural gas derive from ancient biological material which took its energy from the sun(via plant photosynthesis) millions of years ago. All the energy in wood and foodstuffs also comes from the sun. Movement of the wind(which causes waves at sea), and the evaporation of water to form rainfall which accumulates in rivers and lakes, are also powered by the sun. Therefore, hydroelectric power and wind and wave power are forms of indirect solar energy. Direct solar energy is what we usually mean when we speak of solar power-it is the use of sunlight for heating or generating electricity. 2, record 19, English, - solar%20energy

Energetech Australia is building a prototype electricity generator based on wave power on the breakwater at Port Kembla in New South Wales. A submerged chamber is open below the water level. When the waves rise up around the chamber, the water inside the chamber rises and falls with the waves. This compresses and decompresses air above the water in the chamber, creating airflow which drives a turbine. The turbines work with the air flowing in both directions. The blades change angle, depending on the speed and direction of the airflow … An ocean wall in the shape of a parabola concentrates the wave energy onto a central point where the power station is located … The amount of converted energy depends on the wind speed, the time the wind blows over the waves, and the distance it covers. During a wave's voyage, it shapes into a more regular wave, commonly referred to as a swell. At ocean shores, swells are very regular and discernable, even when the sea is calm. 1, record 20, English, - wave%20energy%20breakwater

1, record 21, French, - convertisseur%20Pelamis

The purpose of the wind scatterometer is to obtain information on wind speed and direction at the sea surface.... The wind scatterometer measures the echo power of a signal transmitted by the satellite and returned from the ocean surface. The echo power is affected by the surface wind conditions. Three antennae are used to obtain information about the wind at the ocean surface. Each antenna points in a different direction, and hence for a particular point on the ocean surface three echo power values, obtained from three different angles, are used to calculate the surface wind vectors. 6, record 24, English, - wind%20scatterometer

The wind scatterometer does not directly measure the wind. It measures the radar backscatter of the ocean’s surface which is related to the wind via a geophysical model function. To measure the radar backscatter, the instrument transmits a pulse of RF energy and measures the backscattered power. 7, record 24, English, - wind%20scatterometer

Power consumption is relatively high in small plants(of the order of 20 kWh per cubic metre processed). This is due to the inadequate efficiency of the high-pressure pumps and the necessity to circulate and pressurize a large quantity of sea water(about five times the output of water processed) in order to prevent an excessive concentration of brine and a corresponding increase in osmotic pressure. Electricity costs in large installations can be greatly reduced by the use of recovery turbines. 1, record 36, English, - recovery%20turbine

1, record 36, French, - turbine%20de%20r%C3%A9cup%C3%A9ration
