Distant-water fishing, that is, fishing in areas far removed from a country's domestic waters, existed well before the 19th century industrialization with, for example, Europeans fishing for Atlantic cod... off Newfoundland... Increasing competition between domestic and foreign fishing vessels for national fisheries resources was one of the motivations behind the series of international negotiations in the 1970s and 1980s, leading to the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea... 4, record 2, English, - distant%20water%20fishing

The upper water layer of the ocean contains air bubbles, induced by wind and waves. These air bubbles attenuate the sound transmission and reception from a hull-mounted transducer... The thickness of the bubble layer may be 5-10 m, or more, depending on the sea state. A towed transducer operates below this bubble layer. The transducer is closer to the fish. This gives a better signal to noise ratio, and also the resolution of single fish is improved because the width of the sound beam is smaller. A territory that entered the Canadian Confederation in 1898 as the "Yukon Territory", out of the District of Yukon created in 1895 in the Northwest Territories. Until 1999, the Yukon used to stand eleventh in the order of precedence established according to the year of entry into Confederation of the ten provinces, then of the territories, listed, by convention, before the Northwest Territories even if the latter entered Confederation 28 years before. It now stands twelfth, after the Northwest Territories and before Nunavut. On March 27, 2002, the name was changed to "Yukon" even if the status of territory remains. 2, record 5, English, - Yukon
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The name of a territory and its form, spelling and abbreviation are to be decided by the provincial toponymy authority, with the agreement of the Government of Canada. One uses "Yukon" (or "territory of Yukon") for the geographical entity, "Yukon" for the provincial administration or as the short form, and "Yk." as the abbreviation to be officially recognized by the toponymic authority, a change from the previous "Y.T.". 2, record 5, English, - Yukon
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 2 OBS
Approved by ISO, the Canada Post two-character symbol is YT (or CA-YT), [to be changed to YK (or CA-YK) if a request to that extent is made and accepted]. This symbol is the same in all languages and must be used only in postal addresses and statistical charts where the identification of provinces and territories is restricted to two characters. A two-character territorial symbol must not be used instead of the abbreviation in a text or on a geographical map, a poster or a road sign. 2, record 5, English, - Yukon
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 3 OBS
The use of the definite article in English before "Yukon" is dependent upon how it is used in the context. If "Yukon" modifies another term, then the article is omitted. e. g. Yukon Indians comprise 25% of the population of the territory. If "Yukon" takes the inflected genitive('s), then the use of the article is optional. e. g.(the) Yukon's wildlife resources;(the) Yukon's native people. In every other case, the use of the definite article would be in keeping with common usage as it signals the absence of a generic geographic feature. Hence we say "the Mediterranean"(implied :Sea), "the Philippines"(implied :"Islands"). Currently, there is some debate as to the appropriateness of the definite article, all the more since "the Yukon"(implied :"territory") is seeking political parity with the other established "provinces"(statement of 1991). [Usage can thus tend to drop the article as is the case before the name of a province. ] 6, record 5, English, - Yukon

Before 1958, some authors specified the "international" law of the sea, in order to differentiate it from maritime law relating to shipping, commerce, navigation and, generally, maritime affairs under the particular jurisdiction of sovereign states. Ocean-floor metamorphism is a type of metamorphism of regional or local extent related to the steep geothermal gradient occurring near spreading centres in oceanic environments. The recrystallisation, which is mostly incomplete, encompasses a wide range of temperatures. The metamorphism is associated with circulating hot aqueous fluids (with related metasomatism) and typically shows an increasing temperature of metamorphism with depth. 5, record 30, English, - ocean%2Dfloor%20metamorphism

During extension at mid-ocean ridges (red-orange), convection carries heat to very shallow levels, where 7-km thick oceanic crust forms; hydrothermal circulation produces low P/T metamorphism, often called seafloor metamorphism: Many good examples of seafloor metamorphism are known from ophiolites in the Sierra Nevada and Klamaths. 3, record 30, English, - ocean%2Dfloor%20metamorphism

In addition, in January 2000 the Minister announced the [Canadian Forces’(CF) ] intention to establish a combat-ready strike force ready to respond rapidly to global crises in the context of NATO or UN [United Nations] mandated missions. Central to achieving the capability will be strategic lift, an area where the CF has only limited resources. Its Hercules and Polaris aircraft are often overworked, and the CF has no dedicated sea lift assets. DND [Department of National Defence] has begun studies to determine the CF's future strategic lift requirements, one element of which will likely be an Afloat Logistics and Sealift Capability that will combine capabilities for fleet replenishment at sea, in-theatre support to joint forces ashore, and strategic lift for the army. 1, record 32, English, - strategic%20lift

1, record 32, French, - transport%20strat%C3%A9gique

The South Pacific Forum Fisheries Agency(FFA), formed by member countries of the South Pacific Forum in 1979, is based in Honiara, Solomon Islands. The agency was formed in response to the far-reaching changes taking place in the 1960s and 1970s in the international Law of the Sea, and the steadily increasing level of commercial tuna fishing in the Central and Western Pacific. The Functions of FFA are to provide scientific, commercial, and technical information, and advice to member countries in relation to the "living marine resources of the region and in particular the highly migratory species. "Within that broad scope, under the direction of the Forum Fisheries Committee, FFA has concentrated on assisting its members in the sustainable management and development of their tuna resources. 2, record 33, English, - South%20Pacific%20Forum%20Fisheries%20Agency
