A permanent thermocline exists beneath the stream sloping upward from the right to the left side of the current. This thermocline separates the warm water of the Gulf Stream from the cold slope water and the boundary is often referred to as the cold wall or north wall. Satellite altimeters have been providing continuous global measurements of sea level, ocean wind speeds and wave heights for over 25 years, and provide a key contribution for monitoring climate change. However, there is a difficulty in retrieving accurate measurements close to the coast. An innovative processing technique has been developed in the UK [United Kingdom] to retrieve this data, and is applied, in this project, to data from the Jason1 series of altimeter satellites for the Mozambique, Madagascar and South Africa coastal regions. The "coastal altimeter data" generated will be delivered through a web-based portal, and the project team will support local partners in using the data... 2, record 3, English, - coastal%20altimeter%20data

Earth observation satellites are used to observe the earth surfaces, sea surfaces, ocean currents, clouds, etc., from space. Observation instruments are installed on satellites for remote sensing purposes. There is a relatively short development time for a long duration mission. Once launched, it has the advantage of being able to observe wide areas. Instrument operations can be easily performed from the console of a ground control station. Issues with satellite-based remote sensing are as follows : a lengthy development time from planning to actual operations, significant initial investments, risk of launch failure and inability to repair the satellite up in space. 1, record 10, English, - observation%20satellite

The purpose of the wind scatterometer is to obtain information on wind speed and direction at the sea surface.... The wind scatterometer measures the echo power of a signal transmitted by the satellite and returned from the ocean surface. The echo power is affected by the surface wind conditions. Three antennae are used to obtain information about the wind at the ocean surface. Each antenna points in a different direction, and hence for a particular point on the ocean surface three echo power values, obtained from three different angles, are used to calculate the surface wind vectors. 6, record 16, English, - wind%20scatterometer

The wind scatterometer does not directly measure the wind. It measures the radar backscatter of the ocean’s surface which is related to the wind via a geophysical model function. The Canadian Geomagnetic Reference Field(CGRF) is a mathematical model of the geomagnetic field over Canada. It is produced by carrying out a spherical cap harmonic analysis on numerous observations of the magnetic field made on the ground, at sea, in the air, and a satellite altitudes between 1960 and 1994. The latest CGRF is for 1995, but contains time terms that enable it to be used over the time interval 1960 to 2000. 1, record 25, English, - Canadian%20Geomagnetic%20Reference%20Field

Satellite image.... The most common is the infrared image which indicates the temperature of the cloud tops(or the land or sea in cloud free areas). Visible images are also used, but are only useful during daylight hours. Infrared images are most commonly used as they can be taken through night-time hours. 4, record 26, English, - infrared%20image

These images come from satellites which remain above a fixed point on the Earth (ie. they are "geostationary"). The infrared picture shows the same view but looking at a part of the spectrum which our eyes do not detect. The infrared pictures allow us to measure the temperature of the cloud tops, which can be used to determine their height. The whiter clouds are colder than the greyer clouds in this image. Infrared images can be recorded 24 hours a day. Visible pictures can only be made during daylight hours. 5, record 26, English, - infrared%20image
