Most vinyl roofing membranes are sealed using hot air, which can be compared to welding metal. The process joins two rolls of membranes at the overlap areas(without using another dissimilar material) to create one monolithic layer that covers the entire roof. The heat-welded, permanently fused seams on vinyl roofing membrane form a watertight seal, and their peel strength can be critical to the roof system's long-term performance against wind forces.

ROOF technology allows old roof membrane to be renewed without removal. ROOF technology is based upon a thermochemical treatment of bitumen roof coating. With heat applied to a section of roof coating bitumen and bituminiferous mastics start melting. Imbued with own bitumen, roof coating gains improved waterproofing capabilities. Once cooled such coating becomes a tough monolithic layer, smooth and watertight.

Hot-applied rubberized asphalts consist of proprietary blends of asphalt, mineral fillers, elastomers (natural, synthetic, or a blend of both), virgin or reclaimed oil and a thermoplastic resin. It is applied hot in such a manner as to form an impermeable monolithic membrane over the surface to be waterproofed, which may be concrete, gypsum board or wood. Improved versions of this type of system consist of two coats of rubberized asphalt with a polyester mat in between, called the fully reinforced or two-ply system.

Back vent. A pipe or system of pipes connected to the drainage pipes of a plumbing system for the purpose of supplying or removing air to relieve pressures above or below atmospheric. A back vent is that part of a vent line which connects directly with an individual trap beneath or behind a fixture and extends to a branch or main soil or waste pipe at any point higher than the fixture or fixture trap it serves.

A chest tube is a tube inserted into the chest cavity for removal of air or fluid, or both; it is needed when the normally airtight pleural space has been penetrated through surgery or trauma, when a defect in the alveoli allows air to enter the intrapleural space, or when there is an accumulation of fluid, as from pleural effusion. Excessive air or fluid in the pleural space can cause collapse of the lung and the danger of mediastinal shift.

Simply put, the pressure chamber... is just a device for applying air pressure to a leaf(or small shoot), where most of the leaf is inside the chamber but a small part of the leaf stem(the petiole) is exposed to the outside of the chamber through a seal. The amount of pressure that it takes to cause water to appear at the petiole tells you how much tension the leaf is experiencing on its water : a high value of pressure means a high value of tension and a high degree of water stress. The units of pressure most commonly used are the Bar(1 Bar=14. 5 pounds per square inch) and the megapascal(1 MPa=10 bars).

How is water potential measured? ... - Pressure bomb (pressure chamber): measures [psi subscript w] of whole leaves, stems : - when a stem or leaf is cut off of a plant, the sap is sucked back into the xylem, since it is under tension; - the tissue is sealed inside a steel chamber, with the cut end protruding; - pressure is applied (using compressed nitrogen) until the sap is pushed back up to the top; this amount of pressure is equal but opposite to the [Psi subscript w] of the tissue.

The core rod assembly... has four functions or features : It forms the interior of the preform. It supports the parison or the bottle during transfer. It is the valve where air enters to expand the parison. The valve is located either in the shoulder area or in the tip, the location being governed by the bottle or core rod length-to-diameter ratio. Wide mouth bottles(that is, core rods with low length-to-diameter ratios) will usually have a shoulder valve. The core rod has a "blow by" groove. This annular groove, located near the seating shank... is needed to seal the parison and prevent excessive air loss during bottle blowing and to eliminate elastic retraction of the parison during the transfer between cavities.

A liquid filling technique by which containers are filled in a low vacuum atmosphere.

It requires a seal on the container and fills the container(usually a bottle) to a predetermined level. The purpose of the low vacuum atmosphere is first to eliminate overflow and recirculation which are inherent in a pure vacuum filler, and to avoid filling a cracked or chipped-neck bottle. If a vacuum is not established in container, it will not fill; also prevents drip.... As in a gravity filler, level is established in the bottle when the vent port through which the air in the bottle escapes, is closed by the rising liquid.
