When a reciprocating or rotating shaft extends from a bearing or a housing(enclosure) containing a fluid, such as a pump, a gearbox, or a hydraulic transmission, the shaft must be free to move relative to the housing, and at the same time leakage of fluids... must be restricted. The purpose of a seal is to restrict the leakage with the least possible restraint on the relative motion.
