A synthetic compound of sand and sulfer, plastic, or other materials used in place of lead to produce a watertight joint in pipes carrying fluids.

CONT

Pipes should have pipe joint compound applied to their threads. Compound helps seal the joint and makes it easier to take apart if necessary later. Teflon tape may be used instead of compound.

Generally these seals can be found under the form of shrink bands or sleeves that are applied around the necks and caps of containers. A more primitive type of seal that has been reported is an adhesive tape applied on the unglued flap and two sides of a box containing one medicine bottle. It might also be found directly on the cap and the sides of the bottle.
