CONT

Flashings are used to make watertight any roof area where the roof membrane terminates, is interrupted, or intersects an area or projection having a marked change in slope or direction... Flashings are generally divided into two categories : base flashings and counterflashings. Base flashings are, in a sense, a continuation of the membrane, turned up onto a surface that is in a different plane from the field of the roof, and installed as a separate operation. They are usually fabricated using a nonmetallic material, such as an asphalt-coated felt. Counterflashings, or cap flashings, can be of metal, coated felt, or other materials. They shield and seal the exposed edges of the base flashing. The combined use of non-metallic materials for base flashings and metal for counterflashings brings out the best in each material. Bituminous base flashing materials have the same coefficient of expansion and contraction as the roof membrane, and they work together as a unit. They are the only type of material acceptable for use in constructing base flashings.

OBS

bituminous base flashing: term officially approved by the Lexicon Project Committee (New Brunswick).

OBS

The fire extinguishing equipment for an airliner such as the Douglas DC-10 incorporates three systems with six pressurized agent containers, two for each engine. The containers for the wing-mounted engines are located in pairs in the leading edge of the wing between the nacelle and the fuselage on each side of the aircraft.... The discharge cartridge is an electrically fired explosive unit that provides force to rupture the disk seal in the outlet port of the container and release the extinguishing agent to the deployment lines. One discharge cartridge is installed on each wing-mounted container and two are installed on the aft-engine container. The discharge cartridge contains two squibs(explosive charges) that are fired by an electric circuit that heats the powder to the ignition point. When the fire extinguisher control handle is pulled down, the electric circuit is closed and the squibs are fired. The force of the explosion ruptures the disk seal, thus releasing the extinguishing agent. A screen in the discharge head prevents particles of the disk from entering the deployment line.

OBS

This system is specific to the McDonnell Douglas Corporation aircraft (DC-9, DC-10).

Titration detector. The visual or automatic titration methods of James and Martin provided techniques for the titration of chromatographically separated volatile monocarboxylic acids. In the presence of an indicator, the titration can be followed visually or automatically recorded. With the automatic titration buret, the separated acidic or basic components in the carrier gas pass directly into the titration cell. A suitable colorimetric indicator ... is used with a photoelectric relay to control the addition of titrant from a syringe-type dispensing buret, the plunger of which is coupled to a recording pen.

OBS

Mc Innes [improved the automatic titrator by including] a polyethylene gland [which incorporated] a mercury seal for the recording buret, an automatic switch-off device for the apparatus, and a photoelectric unit which provided stable and full control for dispensing titrant.
