When hard braking is applied for slowing down or stopping after an aborted takeoff or emergency stop situation, the tire is locked up and can’t rotate, causing rapid heat buildup. When the tire begins to smoke, rubber debris build up under the tire. As the skid continues, more and more debris cause a barrier to form against the water, preventing it from escaping past the tire. A seal has now been created... heating the water under the tire to a point where steam exists. The steam is strong enough to support the tire and prevent runway contact. Should the skid continue, the tire enters reverted rubber state as more heat, steam and rubber debris continue the process. 1, record 1, English, - reverted%20rubber%20hydroplaning

Flashings are used to make watertight any roof area where the roof membrane terminates, is interrupted, or intersects an area or projection having a marked change in slope or direction... Flashings are generally divided into two categories : base flashings and counterflashings. Base flashings are, in a sense, a continuation of the membrane, turned up onto a surface that is in a different plane from the field of the roof, and installed as a separate operation. They are usually fabricated using a nonmetallic material, such as an asphalt-coated felt. Counterflashings, or cap flashings, can be of metal, coated felt, or other materials. They shield and seal the exposed edges of the base flashing. The combined use of non-metallic materials for base flashings and metal for counterflashings brings out the best in each material. Bituminous base flashing materials have the same coefficient of expansion and contraction as the roof membrane, and they work together as a unit. They are the only type of material acceptable for use in constructing base flashings. 2, record 3, English, - bituminous%20base%20flashing

Si le toit se termine à un parapet ou à une chanlatte, le solin de base devrait passer par-dessus cette construction et être fixé à l'extérieur, par exemple à une bande de clouage. Surge-blocks, swabs, or plungers are disc shaped devices made to fit tightly within the well. Their edges are usually fitted with rubber or leather rings to make a tight seal against the well casing. Pipe sections are then attached to the surge-block to lower it into the well, above the well screen, and about 15 feet below the water level. The assembly is then repeatedly lifted up and down. The up and down action of the surge-block creates suction and compression strokes that force water in and out of the well through the screened interval, gravel pack, and aquifer. It works like a plunger in the way that it removes small obstructions and sediments from the well. The surge-block is slowly lowered each time resistance begins to decrease. 2, record 5, English, - surge%20block

Self-sealing tires are designed to fix most tread-area punctures instantly and permanently. These tires feature standard tire construction with the exception of an extra lining inside the tire under the tread area that's coated with a puncture sealant that can permanently seal most punctures from nails, bolts or screws up to 3/16 of an inch in diameter. In most wrapping machines the loaves pass along a travelling band from the slicer, although the wrapper can be used independent of the slicer. As the loaves move along they pass under a roll of waxed wrapping paper, while two jaws move downwards and pick up the loaf inside a piece of paper of a size sufficient to enclose it, a self-measuring mechanism controlling this action. Then, by means of sliding plates which are timed so as to complete one operation after another, the paper is folded round the loaf. The loaf then travels along another band and passes between two plates, electrically heated, which melt the wax of the paper and so seal up the package. 4, record 8, English, - wrapping%20machine

Replacing a tap washer. Given that up to 50% of an electricity bill may be attributable to water heating, it is important to ensure that your hot water taps don’t drip... A leaky tap usually occurs because the internal seal is worn out. Each time you turn the tap off, the soft flexible washer, which is made from rubber or a synthetic substitute, presses against the metal washer seat, wearing a tiny part of itself away. Eventually it becomes thin and irregular in shape. This allows water to seep past and creates the annoying drip. If you don’t replace it but continue to screw the tap down tighter and tighter, eventually you will get metal forcing you to call in a plumber to regrid the washer seating. That can be an expensive business! 3, record 10, English, - tap%20washer

"Dry boring" methods employ the use of a temporary casing to seal the pile bore through water-bearing or unstable strata overlying suitable stable material. Upon reaching the design depth a reinforcing cage is introduced, concrete is placed in the bore and bought up to the required level. The casing is then withdrawn. "Wet" boring also employs a temporary casing through unstable ground and is used when the pile bore cannot be sealed against water ingress. Boring is then undertaken using a digging bucket to drill through the underlying soils to design depth. The reinforcing cage is lowered into the bore and concrete is placed by tremmie pipe, following which extraction of the temporary casing takes place. 1, record 11, English, - temporary%20casing

High-frequency sealing is the most-used method for sealing laminated tubes. Its advantages include excellent seal strength and high speeds. In this system, high frequency current is sent through the tube causing the aluminum foil layer to heat up. The hot foil melts the plastic inner layer, creating a strong, hermetic seal when the tube is crimped. 1, record 15, English, - high%2Dfrequency%20sealing
