The mercurial barometer consists of a glass tube, sealed at one end and filled with pure mercury. After being heated to expel the air, it is inverted in a small cup of mercury called the cistern. The mercury in the tube sinks slightly, creating above it a vacuum(the Torricellian vacuum). Atmospheric pressure on the surface of the mercury in the cistern supports the column in the tube, which varies in height with variations in atmospheric pressure and hence with changes in elevation, generally decreasing with increases in height above sea level.  3, record 1, English, - barometer%20cistern

Le baromètre à cuvette est directement déduit du tube de Torricelli. Sans dispositif approprié, la lecture précise de la hauteur de la colonne de mercure n'est pas très facile. On a donc disposé au-dessus de la cuvette une vis à deux bouts pointus, l'inférieur venant juste tangenter la surface libre du métal dans la cuvette. À l'aide d'un cathétomètre, on vient mesurer la différence de hauteur entre la pointe supérieure de la vis et la surface libre dans le tube.
