Gaskets for Glazing. Structural gaskets, made of preformed and cured elastomeric materials, may be used instead of sash for some applications to hold glass in places. Gaskets are extruded in a single strip, molded into the shape of the window perimeter and installed against the glass and window frames. A continuous locking strip of harder elastomer is then forced into one side of the gasket as a final sealing component. Fit and compression of the gasket determine weathertightness. With proper installation, calking is not ordinarily required; but should it be necessary, sealants are available that are compatible with the material of which the gasket is made. Strip, tile and farm drains are typical ways of collecting run-off from large, flat areas where drainage occurs in a "sheet fashion". Strip drains are similar to catch basins in that they have a sump area to collect settlement and a removable grate for easy maintenance. Both tile and farm drains consist of small trenches covered with grass. Since the tile drain is connected to an underground drainage system, it provides better drainage that the farm drain; but neither system works when the ground is frozen.... Farm drains are used only in agricultural situations; it is very likely that they eventually will not drain properly due to becoming clogged with sedimentation. 7, record 15, English, - French%20drain

Hot melt sealing : In this sealing method, either a continuous strip or dots of molten thermoplastic material is applied between the two surfaces to be sealed, just before they are pressed together. The hot melt contains sufficient heat to cause it to adhere to the package members to be sealed together, and the package members have the heat absorbing capacity to chill the seal before pressure is relieved. 1, record 24, English, - hot%20melt%20sealing

Magnetic sealing is used where heavy polyolefin package members are to be sealed. A gasket, shaped to fit between the sealing faces of the two package members, is made from the same thermoplastic as the package, but has milled into it an iron-containing compound that has a high hysteresis loss. The package portions are pressed together with the gasket between their sealing surfaces and placed in a magnetic field oscillating at a frequency high enough to melt the gasket. This in turn melts the sealing surfaces and causes them to weld together. As an alternative to a gasket, an iron-containing material can be preapplied to one or both of the sealing surfaces, producing the same result. 2, record 25, English, - magnetic%20sealing

The most highly developed are those which permit of a fully automatic operation, involving pocket forming from reel-fed material, filling and vacuum sealing. For dealing with pockets filled separately, a number of vacuum-sealing machines are available. These may be of the chamber or probe type. With the former, the pocket is placed into the chamber, air withdrawn from both the chamber and pocket, and the pocket sealed in situ by remotely controlled heat-sealing jaws before the chamber pressure is returned to atmospheric. 4, record 26, English, - chamber%2Dtype%20vacuum%20sealing%20machine

Ethylenecopolymer bitumen(ECB). ECB membranes have been developed basically for the roofing industry but are also applied in civil engineering as sealing materials. The raw materials used for ECB are ethylene and bytyl acrylate, together forming 50 to 60%, and a special bitumen, 40 to 50%. These materials are mixed in an extrusion process at a temperature of about 160 °C. The bitumen gives the material a thermoplastic character and also acts as a softener and a light stabilizer. 1, record 29, English, - ethylene%20copolymer%20bitumen

In band sealing, a pouch mouth is introduced between two moving bands, which are pressed together by heated bars. The heat passes through the bands and into the pouch material, softening it for sealing. As the pouch continues along between the bands, the bands are next pressed together by chilled bars that withdraw heat from the pouch seal through the bands. The bands then progress to release the pouch. Band sealing is fast and widely used for closing pouches filled with product. 3, record 31, English, - band%20sealer
