SEALING OPERATION [6 records]

Record 1 2026-01-08

English

Subject field(s)
  • Guns (Land Forces)
  • Guns (Naval)
CONT

The major problem to be solved with breechloading artillery was obturation : the sealing of the breech after firing to ensure that none of the gases generated by the burning of the propellant(initially gunpowder) escaped rearwards through the breech.... The second problem was speed of operation : how to close the breech before firing and open it after firing as quickly as possible consistent with safety. Two solutions were developed more or less in parallel : The "screw breech" block and "sliding wedge" or "sliding block. "

Subject field(s)
  • Packaging Machinery and Equipment
DEF

A vacuum packaging machine which vacuum form-fills and seals containers with food products in plastic bags under a special pressure chamber.

CONT

A wide range of equipment is now available for vacuum packaging of non-rigid containers. The most highly developed are those which permit of a fully automatic operation, involving pocket forming from reel-fed material, filling and vacuum sealing. For dealing with pockets filled separately, a number of vacuum-sealing machines are available. These may be of the chamber or probe type. With the former, the pocket is placed into the chamber, air withdrawn from both the chamber and pocket, and the pocket sealed in situ by remotely controlled heat-sealing jaws before the chamber pressure is returned to atmospheric.

OBS

Chamber vacuum-packaging machinery includes single- and double-chamber as well as a conveyor-fed system.

DEF

Subject field(s)

CONT

Hot-wire or knife sealing is adaptable to a very high speed operation and is used for both sealing and cutting apart polyethylene bags on bag-making equipment.... Unsupported films, when trim sealed by this method, tend to form a strong bead in their seal areas due to surface tension and orientation. This method is also used to a limited degree with laminated constructions. Hot-wire cutoff is also used in film-dispensing equipment and with L sealers.

CONT

Soudure-coupure par fil ou barre chauffante (...) Principe (...)
