Puffed cereal products are prepared by placing the material in pressure cookers or puffing guns.

The guns, so-called, are pressure vessels about 6 in. in diameter and 30 in. long. They are provided with a steam inlet, a bleed-off valve, and a means for heating the gun-usually by a gas flame. A charge of pellets [made from cereals] at 11 to 12% moisture is dropped into the open end of the gun from a gravity chute leading from the storage bins on the floor above. The end of the gun is sealed by a trip-valve. All valves are closed, sealing the gun. If the gun is heated by gas flames, it is slowly rotated while the temperature, and consequently the pressure, is slowly built up. The temperature may reach 500 to 800 degrees F, and the pressure at the end point may be 100 to 200 psi.... When the pressure reaches the necessary level, the end of the gun is suddenly opened by a trigger mechanism. The contents explode... into a cage or bin with a floor opening leading to a conveyor belt.

Level-sensing fillers fill containers to a controlled level without sealing the container... Such a filling technique eliminates product recirculation and allows filling to a level in plastic containers which would bulge out or flex inward if pressure or vacuum were applied to the sealed container. A level-sensing filler uses some type of sensing means, typically a flow of very low pressure air. Rising liquid level in the container blocks air flow, triggering a control system that shuts off product flow to the container.

A bell jar is a glass vessel open at the bottom and closed on top like a bell. It is used by the semiconductor industry primarily in vacuum operations-the vacuum being created within the bell jar. Accessories include the sealing apparatus between the bell jar and the collar of the vacuum equipment. These are made of neoprene or Viton-O-Ring and covered with vacuum grease that has a very low vapor pressure. The most highly developed are those which permit of a fully automatic operation, involving pocket forming from reel-fed material, filling and vacuum sealing. For dealing with pockets filled separately, a number of vacuum-sealing machines are available. These may be of the chamber or probe type. With the former, the pocket is placed into the chamber, air withdrawn from both the chamber and pocket, and the pocket sealed in situ by remotely controlled heat-sealing jaws before the chamber pressure is returned to atmospheric.
